Smith's Compendious Syriac Dictionary backs your assumption up all the way...and a little bit more if I'm understanding it correctly.
The root, (N=), means to envy, be jealous, to be moved or burn with jealousy, zeal, zealous desire, emulation, indignation (when used with Beith proclitic)
Also, one entry of 0nn= has ardent desire
