Ephesians 5:21
#1
Otto:

Can some explain the following difference between the Greek text and the Peshitta text of Ephesians 5:21?

Greek: "Being submissive to one another in the fear ( fobw ) of Christ."

Peshitta (Lamsa translation): "Submit yourselves one to another in the love of Christ."

Peshitto (Murdock translation): "And be submissive one to another in the love of the Messiah."

There is a big difference between "fear" and "love".

Thanks...

Otto

Larry:

Shlama Akhi Otto,
The Byzantine Majority Text and the Alexandrian Text have fobw cristou--('fear of Christ').
Stephens 1550 Textus Receptus and the Scrivener 1894 Textus Receptus have fobw qeou--('fear of God').
To answer your question as to how this difference between 'fear' in the Greek text and 'love' in the Peshitta text occurred would be difficult to determine. The base word for 'love' in the Peshitta text is 0bwx . This word has other meanings such as 'debt,' 'obligation,' 'guilt,' etc., but that's still a long way from 'fear' that the Greeks chose.

What is up here? Why do some say fear of God and others say fear of Christ? Any Aramaic reason?
