Hello all you New Cov't Aramaic Peshitta seekers.
you know, this very question has been on my mind lately and pressing harder even today. I think we may need to look at Acts 2:38, in the Peshitta, as it is a companion verse of Acts 22:16. Yes, the question is this:
Do we have any grammatical clues in Acts 22:16 to tell us if ". . . calling on the Name of the Lord" or ". . . calling on His Name . . ." means to be baptized.
I read in the Peshitta today that in Acts 2:38 (Younan's interlinear) where Keefa on the day of Pentecost told his audience, "Repent and each of you be baptized in the Name of Y'shua Messiah SO THAT you will recieve the Gift of the SP. of Holiness." (My paraphrase of Aramaic NT).
Murdock read Acts 2:38 almost as the same quote in Acts 2:38 above. But Etheridge translates it this way: "Repent and each of you be baptized in the Name of Y'shua Messiah AND YOU will Recieve the Gift of the SP. of Holiness."
See the difference?? Which one is the most correct rendering, "SO THAT you will recieve the Gift of the SP. of Holiness" or "AND YOU will recieve the Gift of the SP. of Holiness. . ."??
Also, the phrase "calling on His Name" in Acts 22:16 must be taken into account the 2 or 3 other verses in Acts that use this very phrase. I think one is in Acts 9 (see Ananias reply to "Y'shua) and Acts 26 I think it is.
