What is the best translation of the Masoretic Text?
#1
I have the original JPS version of the Holy Scriptures, which seems to be the most accurate translation of the Masoretic that I've found. Lamsa's Old Testament seems to be a modified version of the JPS. What do you think is the best translation of the Masoretic?

Have you seen this one before: Judaica Press Complete Tanach with Rashi? I find that it's very literal, you can see it online here: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/63255/jewish/The-Bible-with-Rashi.htm">http://www.chabad.org/library/article_c ... -Rashi.htm</a><!-- m -->

Here's another interesting one: The Ancient Roots Translinear Bible, also very literal and tied to Strong's. It's not as user friendly but it is searchable, go here: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.ancientrootsbible.com/external/text/word/strongs-search.html">http://www.ancientrootsbible.com/extern ... earch.html</a><!-- m -->

For translations of the Jewish Torah, try The Living Torah: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://bible.ort.org/books/pentd2.asp">http://bible.ort.org/books/pentd2.asp</a><!-- m --> and The Metsudah Chumash with Rashi: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.tachash.org/chumash/pardate.html">http://www.tachash.org/chumash/pardate.html</a><!-- m -->

I think the ArtScroll Tanach Series / Stone Edition of the Tanach by Mesorah Publications is the most popular with Orthodox Jews, but alas it's not available online, you can get from the publisher's website here: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.artscroll.com/Categories/bbt.html">http://www.artscroll.com/Categories/bbt.html</a><!-- m -->

It's still one of the best, although the new JPS version reads "nicer", the old JPS version is definitely the more accurate of the two, plus it's more conservative while the new JPS version is more of a reform translation. Of course all Jewish versions are polemical where the Messianic prophecies are concerned, but generally I find the quality of Jewish translations of the Hebrew Bible better than the Christian versions.

I also recommend finding a good translation of the LXX. The DSS agree with both the LXX and the Masoretic, showing two different textual traditions.

Agreed, besides the upcoming Eastern Orthodox Bible which I already mentioned earlier (the NT translated from the official Patriarchal text is out, while the OT is expected to be released in December, it's a revision of Brenton's 1851 translation), here are some other new options:

Holy Orthodox Bible (in progress): <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.peterpapoutsis.com/">http://www.peterpapoutsis.com/</a><!-- m -->
New English Translation of the Septuagint (complete): <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/nets/">http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/nets/</a><!-- m -->
The Apostle's Bible (revision of Breton, complete): <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.apostlesbible.com/">http://www.apostlesbible.com/</a><!-- m -->
Apostolic Bible Polyglot (Greek-English interliner, complete): <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://apostolicbible.com/">http://apostolicbible.com/</a><!-- m -->
Thomson's 1808 translation - the very first English translation: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://thetencommandmentsministry.us/ministry/charles_thomson/">http://thetencommandmentsministry.us/mi ... s_thomson/</a><!-- m -->

LXX Psalters:

Athanasian Grail Psalater: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.athanasius.com/psalms/psalms1.html">http://www.athanasius.com/psalms/psalms1.html</a><!-- m -->
The Psalter According the Seventy (the most popular Greek Orthodox Pslater): <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://pomog.org/index.html?http://pomog.org/psalter.shtml">http://pomog.org/index.html?http://pomo ... lter.shtml</a><!-- m -->

Dear Christina,

'The Ancient Roots Translinear Bible' is virtually WORD-PER-WORD from 'Rotherham's Emphasized Bible'.

The "translator" probably doesn't say this, but never-the-less, it's TRUE.

Do you know 'The Koren Jerusalem Bible' by Translated by Harold Fisch?

Or this one:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.amazon.com/Five-Books-Moses-Leviticus-Deuteronomy/dp/0805211195/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1220914541&sr=1-1">http://www.amazon.com/Five-Books-Moses- ... 541&sr=1-1</a><!-- m -->

They are BOTH excellent!

Unless I find another version that is truly spectacular, I'll probably just stick to my JPS.

Hmm, I don't know that, didn't compare the two and I didn't see the translator mention it.

I have heard of this one, that's fantastic. BUT no electronic version available, and it's to expensive for me to ship books my side, so I guess that'll have to wait till I move to London in January, I definitely want a copy.

I have this one. Ryan bought a copy for me and sent it to me, and I'm eternally indebted to his generosity. I've had it for a few days now and you're right, it's fantastic!

Yes, isn't Ryan a Champ in every way!!??

A truly Righteous man he is!

And he's been *a very good friend* to me, at a really hard point in my life (right NOW).

And I was gonna tell Spyrdon to check out the READER'S REVIEWS of "The Five Books of Moses'
