I don't understand the first word of this verse. Ele can be either "but" or "if" correct? If it's "but" what is he contrasting this to? There doesn't seem to be anything. But if it's an "if" then where is the "then"? Where there's an "if" there must be a "then."
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Contrasted to verses 1- 3 where he advises going on to perfection from basic teachings and repetition of gospel truths of baptism,eternal judgment, resurrection and laying on of hands (healing and anointing of The Holy Spirit). Those who remain stuck in elementary doctrines seem to risk falling back into sin, according to verse 6. "They cannot be renewed to conversion" is how I have translated it, which is quite literal.

That's how I see it, at least.
