That's also why they call you guys "Nestorian" so that people can say "oh, they are just people from the RCC who agreed with a guy called Nestorius ages ago". Horrible stuff. You shouldn't build a patriarchate on such deception, the other thing being them saying the orthodox came from them not the other way round. The Portuguese had a completely different culture, it was a twilight zone I suppose for you guys. Not that in my opinion they were bad people, just that they were completely different, they thought the pope was the the "vicarius fili dei" and that anybody not agreeing with them was a pseudo-christian. Sad really. I hope the RCC does not win because St.Peter visited you guys first...PERIOD!

St. Thomas Christians remained in communion with the Church of the East until their encounter with the Portuguese in 1498. With the establishment of Portuguese power in parts of India, clergy of that nationality, in particular certain members of the Society of Jesus, attempted to latinize the Indian Christians.

Every attempt to resist the latinization process was branded by them heretical. Under their indigenous archdeacon, the Thomas Christians resisted, but the result was disastrous.

The OATH

The Saint Thomas Christians who gathered at Mattancherry near Fort Kochi under the leadership of the archdeacon to receive a bishop from Iran took the Oath. After the Oath twelve priests laid hands on the head of the archdeacon, who was connected to the Coonan Cross by a rope, and ordained him Bishop. The several thousand other people who were there also took hold of the rope to signify their participation in the Oath.

The families/households represented by all these people and others later accepted the Antiochean tradition. They now form the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church (or the autocephalous Indian Orthodox Church), the Mar Thoma Church, the Jacobite Church. The group of Saint Thomas Christians who did not participate in the Coonan Cross, remained with Portuguese Padroado later came under papal authority and are called the Syro-Malabar Church.
