The big difference is that his common ancestor is primitive while the true ones were "elite". Read the free book by Peter M Scheele:

Basically the variation isn't caused by EVOLVING, but by DEGRADING. Fascinating stuff that makes sense of many things like why humans get weaker why hybrids are stronger, why you can't "back breed" to older species etc.
