After Voobus
#1
We have seen how Burkitt wrongly thought that the peshitta was produced by Rabulla. This theory was rufuted by Arthur Voobus.
But what about scholarly opinion since then? Has it just been ignored?

Paul provided this quote in another thread here.
Quote:The question who it was that produced the Peshitta version of the New Testament will perhaps never be answered. That it was not Rubbula has been proved by Voobus's researches. . .In any case, however, in view of the adoption of the same version of the Scriptures by both the Eastern (Nestorian) and Western (Jacobite) branches of Syrian Christendom, we must conclude that it had attained a considerable degree of status before the division of the Syrian Church in AD 431. (Bruce M. Metzger, The Early Versions of the New Testament (New York: Claredon, 1977), p. 36)

Did any scholars after Voobus attempt to suggest the origin of the peshitta?

Shlama Akhi Michael,

No, basically.

At this point, you basically have two camps in the Greek-Primacist world - those who continue to believe in Burkitt's theory and on the other hand those who follow Voobus (who are in the majority).

Then you have us to tell them both to take a hike! <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->

I was looking at a Syriac Orthodox, discussion group last night. And thought you might find this interesting.

"Dear (withheld ),

There are Aramaic Scholars said that the Peshitto is an edited Peshitta. The recent Peshitto is Rabbula's revisions were never accepted in the East (Persian Empire) which was revised once in 508 and again 616 to align itself with Greek, has later reading of Hebrews. The Church Father Origen recorded the Peshitta version of Hebrews 2:9-10 that no Greek mss has regardless of antiquity. Other discrepancies include the story of the woman taken in adultery (John 7:53-8:11) which is not only missing from all Peshitta mss from the 4th-9th centuries but also from the four earliest Greek mss as well, as well as three lines in Luke 22 that were added in Greek but never present in Peshitta. Acts 20:28 originally said "Messiah" at the end (Peshitta) but then was altered to read "God". One more thing all of Yukhanan are very different between Peshitto & Peshitta.

Thank you."

If Voobus claimed that the peshitta was a revision of the Old syriac what evidence did he present?

We have seen Yuri argue that aphrahat quotes the OS but the only examples he has presented are when a portion of a quote from Aphrahat reads "like" the OS , however (and I stand to be corrected) this is only achieved by cutting of the beginning and the end of the quote.
Conversely Aphrahat does in fact quote the peshitta word for word.

Did Voobus use the same kind of argumemts?

Circumstantial evidence based on the similiarity of certain readings. Obviously, there is a strong relationship between the two texts as sometimes they read verbatim like each other.

Voobus theorized that the OS was older because it more resembled the Western family of Greek texts, which were in his time and even today considered by most GPs to be an older text type within the various Greek families.

We contend, however, that the similiarities between the Peshitta~OS are due to the fact that the OS was a revision of the Peshitta to bring it closer in line with the "Western" family of Greek texts. Keep in mind that OS was found in Egypt, where the vast majority of "Western" family of Greek texts have survived. Egypt is, and has always been, a Monophysite stronghold.

Rabbula was a Monophysite and strongly allied with the Coptic Church in Egypt. In fact, Cyril who was the opponent of Nestorius was himself a Copt and allied with Rabbula in stamping out the Church of the East.

Precisely. Mar Aphrahat had never heard of the Old Scratch. He quotes verbatim from the Peshitta, when quoting verbatim. When paraphrasing, some of his quotes look like the OS because the Western-type text of the Greek family is actually a more "paraphrased" account of the original gospels...and they contain many "interpolations" and "expanded" readings.

Pretty much, yes. That's why many GPs are still in the Burkitt camp (an even more ridiculous opinion!)

That's why we tell them both to take a hike!
