It is believed the earliest Chinese Bible was translated from the parts of Bible brought by the Nestorian church. The pioneer missionary was called Aluoben in Chinese. There are some unearthed documents or artifacts showing the evidence that church temples (buildings) were built for preaching and Bible translation.
However, it is apparent that all the translated Bible manuscripts were lost.
It is believed that without Bibles is one of the main reasons that Christianity was uprooted when the foreigen missionaries were gone.
I do not know whether or not the Nestorian churches have had the similar traditions to the Roman Catholic Church, who used to forbid the laymen to read the Bible.
