Phonetic Translation
#1
Hey,

I am new here and the MAIN reason I came on is that I need some help with translating. I have, the intertwined english and aramaic new testament of matthew from this accompaning website. The problem is this; I have no Hebrew background or arabic so its hard for me to know how to pronouce the words.

If anyone can phonetically (FO-NET-TICK-LEE) translate Matthew 6:9-13, the Our Father prayer, I would forever be gracious! I know it may or may not be time consuming, but any little bit will help.

For future help, do you think it would be helpful to learn some key Hebrew words and phrases to help me to futher speak Aramaic.

Thanks!

shlomo habr SkammyManX,

If you go through the syriac lessons on "Beith Souryoy?? Morounoy??" you'll learn how to pronounce Aramaic:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.beith-morounoye.org/">http://www.beith-morounoye.org/</a><!-- m -->
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.beith-morounoye.org/syriac/index1.html">http://www.beith-morounoye.org/syriac/index1.html</a><!-- m -->

You can also hear, read (Phoenetically), and learn the Our Father in Aramaic:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.beith-morounoye.org/prayers/index2.html">http://www.beith-morounoye.org/prayers/index2.html</a><!-- m -->

There's also another website which has the sounds of the individual letter:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.assyrianlanguage.com">http://www.assyrianlanguage.com</a><!-- m -->

Hope this helps!

Wow! Amazing! You just made my day! My ultimate goal is to say prayers in aramaic, so this is a 1st step towards that goal

Next thing I need to do is learn how to say things phonetically <!-- sConfusedatisfied: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/satisfied.gif" alt="Confusedatisfied:" title="Satisfied" /><!-- sConfusedatisfied: -->

Brief update for those who would be interested,, my speaking of the prayer is going great, but I have a quick yes/no question....is this syriac the SAME that Jesus would of spoken if he wanted to pray this prayer.

Keeping in my mind that I am a fresh newbie and I havn't researched much, I am confused on Assyrian and Syriac and Aramiac connections, is one the root langauge and the others dialect and the writing looks different to what I was learning on <!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.learnassyrian.com....I">http://www.learnassyrian.com....I</a><!-- w --> am familar with the estrangle (sp) aramiac script....<!-- sBig Grin --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/happy.gif" alt="Big Grin" title="Happy" /><!-- sBig Grin -->

shlomo SkammyManX,

They're all the same language. There are some pronunciation differences, but from a written point of view they're all identical.

We have alot of scripts in Aramaic, and you'll find in Aramaic documents that often people use multiple Aramaic Scripts on the same document.
Most common is to see Estrangelo, Serto, and East Script in the same document.

So what you hear would be the same as that found in the time of Christ.

hope this helps!

It does..

As silly as it may sound -- when I pray I want to think of it as talking to Jesus in a tongue he spoke -- a more spirtual experience.

I've learned how to say the Our Father -- so i am learning fast, but I think I am .1% of the way there as far as talking to you guys in Aramaic. I am a full time Mechanical Engineering Student in Buffalo, NY -- don't really have THAT much extra time to study ancient lanugages -- but I'm getting there.

Maybe over summer...

After Aramaic its on to Latin!
