Acts 2:47
#1
Shlama Akhay,

In the Bezan Greek text, we read with astonishment:

Quote:"..praising God and having favor with all the world (k??smon). And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved."

In all other Greek manuscripts, we read:

Quote:"..praising God and having favor with all the people (la??n). And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved."

The original Aramaic word used in Acts 2:47 is 0m9 ("Aama", people.) This was confused for 0ml9 ("Aalma", world.) There is only 1 letter difference between the two words.

Paul, can you give a two or more varient examples in Luke or Acts based on the translator's "slip" of mistaking one word for another due to a mispelling by one letter??? or a mistaken word that looks very close to another word???

Grace and Peace to all who would want to abide in Y'shua.

Shlama~Tikanis~Yasoo Mike,

I can - there's so many but time is limited I wish I could get a 48-hour day <!-- s:biggrin: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/biggrin.gif" alt="" title="Big Grin" /><!-- s:biggrin: --> Literally, these types of examples are so time-consuming and numerous someone could probably earn a doctorate for their work.

Maybe I should apply?

Paul,

So you mean to tell me that these type of examples just don't pop up occasionally, one here and one there; but that there are many, even very many examples of this sort??? especially in John and Luke/Acts??? ???

Akhan Mike,

Here's the normal process I use. It's either one of two methods where I "stumble" upon one of these examples. Either:

(a) I'm using a critical edition of the Greek NT that lists variants, or
(b) I'm translating the interlinear Aramaic NT here, and I run across a word that has either dual meaning, or looks similar to another word

In the case of (a): If I find that there are two readings split up fairly evenly among the various Greek textual traditions, then I look up the word used in the Peshitta. One of two things is going to happen. Either this variance can be explained within the Greek (perhaps the Greek words looked similar), or in the case where the Greek words are totally different chances are good that the Aramaic word used in the Peshitta either has a dual meaning, or looks similar enough to another Aramaic then we have the solution.

In the case of (b): If I know the Aramaic word has a dual meaning, or looks similar to another Aramaic word while I'm translating, then I'll go look up the critical Greek text to see if any scribal errors occurred. That's how I found Acts 2:24

So yes, there are lots of examples that are found very easily, however the process itself is very time consuming and meticulous.

Paul, and NT Aramaic lovers,

Well, thank-you. I was under the impression, somewhat, that you have done this all the way through the New Testament and that the work is done. You are saying that there might be more examples out there, like this, for Aramaic Primacy to be found??? Has anyone you know of "combed through" the New Testament from beginning to end and listed categorically and chronologically examples like this of variences due to scribal error of one letter, or maybe even letters(for longer words)???

Thank-you.

Y'shua's death on the cross makes you very valuable in Aloha's eyes,

Absolutely. We are breaking new ground here in many cases.

Not that I'm aware of. It's truly a monumental task. Literally someone could use this as a basis for a doctoral dissertation and earn a PhD, I'm sure of it.

the bible is such an over analysed book (in some ways). To get an original peer reviewed paper up of real signifigance is quite difficult. It has all been analysed to death.

Some of the papers are just ridiculous at times.

Here we have something trully groundbreaking...sitting...waiting ...
