Yaqub 3:18
#1
Shlama Akhay,

In the Greek of James 3:18, we read with astonishment: <!-- s:whatthat: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/whatsthat.gif" alt=":whatthat:" title="Whats That" /><!-- s:whatthat: -->

Zorba Wrote:And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace (Gr. Eyrene) of them that make peace (Gr. Eyrene.)

??? <!-- s:tellme: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/tellme.gif" alt=":tellme:" title="Tell Me" /><!-- s:tellme: --> ???

Now in the Aramaic, we read:

Peshitta Wrote:And the fruit of righteousness is sown in 0yn4 (Ar. Shayna) of them that make 0ml4 (Ar. Shlama.)

In Aramaic, the two words are different (Shayna and Shlama), whereas in the Greek it is the same word - "Eyrene" which means "Peace."

Now, the secondary meaning of Shayna in Aramaic is "Cultivated Land" as attested to by the Comprehensive Aramaic Lexicon:

Comprehensive Aramaic Lexicon Wrote:$yn#2 N $yn)
1 Syr cultivated land
2 Syr favorable conditions
3 Syr peace
4 Syr %d$aynA)% tame
5 Syr love of peace
LS2 773
LS2 v: $aynA)
abs. voc: $iyn

As you can see, the Aramaic original reads:

Peshitta Wrote:And the fruit of righteousness is sown in the cultivated land of them that make peace.

Not only is this a mistranslation by Zorba, it also shows a beautiful wordplay which Yaqub used. <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile --> (this one is also going in the "Mistranslations" forum!)

See what happened Akhi Dave, you lit a fire underneath me to start translating again and all this stuff comes out!

Don't you just love originals? <!-- s:onfire: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/onfire.gif" alt=":onfire:" title="On Fire" /><!-- s:onfire: -->

Keep 'em coming <!-- s:bigups: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/bigups.gif" alt=":bigups:" title="Big Ups" /><!-- s:bigups: -->

I just realised... A lot of the gems were found when you were translating and you and Larry were checking over them. Now that you are translating again...

Shlama Akhi Paul,

The Aramaic of Yacob here and your English rendition is very remenicent of Meshikha's parable of the sower, no?

"some seeds fell on the good soil"

Its virtually lost in the Greek > English versions.

Great Find Akh ....

Shlama Akhi Dean,

Very good point. I think Yacob is "drashing" here on that very parable. <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->
