My United Bible Society 4th Edition Greek-English Interlinear New Testament has John 5:5 listed right after John 5:3, with no entry at all for John 5:4. A footnote says some Bibles have the missing John 5:4. Comparing the Greek with the Peshitta it appears as if some Greek manuscript transcriber skipped over a line or two of the text, because not only did he miss 5:4 but also the last part of 5:3. The missing ending of 5:3 says: "....and they were waiting for the water to be stirred up." 5:4 "For an angel of God went down at a certain time to the baptismal pool and stirred up the water; amd whoever went in first after the stirring of the water was healed of any disease he had." [Lamsa]
Interestingly, the missing sections are found in the King James Bible. Apparenltly the Greek text used for the KJV translation is out of vogue now.
