Khabouris vs BFBS/UBS - 2Corinthians 12:2, "Third heaven"
#1
Hello,

While using Peshitta Tool at http://www.dukhrana.com I've noticed that 2Corinthians 12:2 in Khabouris have different order of the last two words than BFBS/UBS version. What's more, aramaic word used in BFBS/UBS version which is translated as "third" differs with one letter from the word used in Khabouris. Peshitta Tool does not recognize the word used in Khabouris, but it recognizes word from BFBS/UBS - is it some mistake? I don't know aramaic so I wanted to kindly ask: does this word in both sources mean "third"?

I've tried to look up this word in other manuscripts. I might be wrong, but it seems that M Syr 148 agrees with Khabouris:

Here is page from Khabouris:

Here is Dukhrana Peshita Tool's analysis of BFBS/UBS version of the verse:

Same word, though the spelling in the Khabouris has a slightly different spelling. The order is reversed of the two words "of the third heavens" in the Khabouris, and "the heavens of the third." in the UBS version.

Thirdwoe, thanks for reply! Do you have any idea why anyone would change spelling and word order in this verse? For me "of the third heavens" has connection to Seven Heavens concept (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Heavens) while "the heavens of the third" does not.

1: The Sky (earth's atmosphere, where the birds fly and the clouds form) = 1st Heavens
2: Space (where the Moon and Stars and Galaxies are) = 2nd Heavens
3: The third Heaven is where Christ is, whom the third Heaven must receive until the time of restoration of all things, when He returns.

The "seven heavens concept" is not found in The Bible.

The Heavens of the third? What does that mean to you?

The UBS text was based on the 1826 A.D. Lee Edition, which version Lee is said to have incorporated several readings that aren't seen elsewhere. This reading might be one of them. The UBS is a composite text made during the 1800's to the early 1900's, which cull its readings from various manuscript sources, and as indicated above has retained some of Lee's unique wording.

The Khabouris is trustworthy, and the wording is not unique to itself. While I'm not certain why the spelling difference, but, it could be dialectical in nature. Maybe Shamasha Paul can speak to that.

Shlama,
Chuck
