peshitta text
#1
I've been slowly working on a translation using currently hebrew for ot and peshitta for nt.

I find it very interesting and have been working on a modified strongs concordance to go along with it. Adding new entities when needed, updating old entries and fixing roots and other info and generally updating it so that both ot and nt are keyed to it.

I became interested in the aramaic also and thought it world be good to add. Is the text from this site available as a simple text file someplace? it would be easier to work with than pdf files.

Thanks

Hello Tobiya,

If you want to translate from The Peshitta Text, you need to translate from The Peshitta Text, as preserved in the ancient Eastern Manuscripts and in the Printed Editions of its Text.

At Dukrahna.com you can find The Peshitta Text in The Khabouris Codex, The Mingana Codex, and in the 1886 Printed Edition given there.

The UBS/BFBS is not The original Peshitta Text, but rather, is a hybrid text mixing Western revisions of The Original Peshitta with readings from the Greek text, which were not originally part of The Peshitta, or The Aramaic Holy Scriptures.

It would be great to see someone come along and really and truly translate The Holy Aramaic Scriptures, i.e. The Peshitta, as found in the Eastern manuscripts. So far, all we have seen is a mixture of The Peshitta's Text, with the later versions which have added some readings from the Greek text.

I know of a few who are working to that end, and Hope one day that The Church of the East, will give us an Official Peshitta Bible in the English language.

Thank you for the response.

What I'm asking for is simply a text file for instance based on the pdf found here.

I have looked around and so far have found nothing like this. But rather pdf or files with allot of other info in them.

am I looking in the wrong places on these sites?

thanks.

I have a PDF here of the 1886 Peshitta NT Text, with the W5 books from the Mosul edition. I could send it via email if you like. Just send me a message in my PM with your email and I'll send it to you. Did you need any printed versions? I know where you can get those as well.

Chuck,
Any idea where one could get OT Peshitta in printed and/or electronic form?

Armamaicbooks.com has the Peshitta OT in a 2 printed editions, and a photostatic copy of the Peshitta OT in a 7th century manuscript, as well as a photostatic copy of the Khabouris Codex. There are just a few scribal mistakes in the Kahbouris Codex, so check with Steven Silvers transcription for those. I have also found one that he hadn't noticed, if you want to know where it is. Here are the links.

At LULU publishers, they have a printed Peshitta OT in 3 vol. Also the real Peshitta NT Text in 2 vol. This is the original Peshitta Text in the Urmia edition, for the 22 NT Books, with the W5 added from the Mosul edition. Here is the link.

For an electronic edition of the Peshitta OT they have it at the CAL website here. Here is the link. I don't promote the UBS/BFBS hybrid text for the NT, which is hosted at this site. It's not the ancient Peshitta text for the 22 books found in the manuscripts. Here is the link to the Peshitta OT.

Make sure to consult Chuck's topic which documents differences between the Eastern and Western Peshitta versions. Most translations and critical editions of the Aramaic New Testament are based on the Western Peshitta (Peshitto). Chuck's a great and highly valued resource on the board

Here are all the differences I have found so far, and there are likely more. I'm going word for word through the Gospel of John now, after completing all the Epistles and Acts. There may be more in the Gospels than has been noticed, and I'll add them to this list when they are found.

Charley, now that I think of it, if you can transcribe an Eastern text, I can actually collate it with the UBS and export *all* differences. I already have the UBS in the pipeline for my CPA collation.

And here's a sample page of the first 8 verses of Mark. Just imagine a "Khab" line under "SyrP":

Most of this is done programmatically, but the final output needs to be manually edited to ensure that cognates match up.

Just curious, are you the same Tobiyah that just registered over at the Ancient Hebrew Message board? I go by my real name Ronen over there and have been there for several years.

Pssh! Don't get your hopes up.

But more seriously, despite all differences, if we were all in person I wouldn't hesitate to share a drink with anyone here. Especially Charley.

(Preferably a cuppa over something hard as I'd like to think I don't drive folks to drink. )

And here, don't imagine it:

I've just added the Khabouris to the typesetting test.

Steve,

That is a great idea...

I have been in the process of just that, as I have been going word for word through the 22 books of the Aramaic Peshitta New Testament, checking a number of Eastern texts (manuscripts and printed editions) and in doing so, I have found that there are a few small scribal mistakes in the Khabouris Codex, and have corrected the errors, which have only been about 3 or 4 so far, after going through all the Epistles and the Book of acts. I'm in the early chapters of The Gospel of John as we speak.

While looking at the slight variance in Mark 1:17 there, I looked up all the instances of the word as given in the Khabouris text in Matthew, and found something odd in 23:5. Take a look at the Khabouris manuscript there and tell me what you see.

But, yea...if you like, I can share the text I have here with you for use on your site. Or better yet, you can just put the Khabouris text there as you go along, and if I know of or might find another mistake in the manuscript, I'll point it out to you, you can verify it, and then change it out on your site.

I have spent an average of about 6 hours a day looking over the text, word for word, letter for letter, seeing exactly what The Peshitta text says, and how it says it. It's a passion in my heart, which hasn't abated for the last 5 years solid, after having seen that most all the English translations and online Aramaic texts tend to either be from the UBS/BSBF text, or a mix with it's text, and The Peshitta's text, or from other Western printed editions (Etheridge/Murdock), than what is found in all the Eastern manuscripts and printed editions thereof.
