Question on 1 Tim.3:16
#1
It's been a while but hello to everyone.

Just one question on The part of the passage that says "G-d was manifest in the flesh".

I was reading in a reek exegetical book that the term for "G-d" there was actually "Who" in the older manuscripts. What does the peshitta or what is the rendering in the Aramaic texts.

Thanks in advance.

I hope this helps.

Kinutho according to Sedra3 means righteousness, uprightness, godliness, rectitude, justice

credit given to Dr. George Anton Kiraz for the use of Sedra3 Peshitta Lexicon.

J.W. Etheridge
1Timothy 3:16 - And truly great is this mystery of righteousness, [Kinutho.] which was revealed in the flesh, and justified by the Spirit, and seen of angels, and preached among the peoples, and believed in the world, and taken up into glory.

James Murdock
1Timothy 3:16 - and truly great, is this mystery of righteousness, which was revealed in the flesh, and justified in the spirit, and seen by angels, and proclaimed among the Gentiles, and believed on in the world, and received up into glory.

KJV
1Timothy 3:16 - And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

The KJV has added the title God.

The KJV translators translated what is found there in the Greek text that they were translating from, which has the word "Theos" (God), rather than the word "Hos" (He who/which) or simply (who/which).

This is a variant in the Greek NT text, which the majority of Greek Manuscripts show "Theos", and the minority shows "Hos". The older copies may be said to have the "Hos" reading, but I would have to check that 1st to be certain, but it's my suspicion at the moment. If so, the Eastern Peshitta text would then show the older form, where it at time doesn't have the Greek "Byzantine" reading, where a variant exists among the Greek "Alexandrian" reading, which it at times shows.

And just to note: Our Father isn't upset if we type the letter "o" between the "G" and the "d" of the title "God", just like He isn't upset if we spell out the word "Alaha", using the vowels.

Thank you sir, I had recently found a site that shows "kinutho" as well and that is the same conclusion to which I have come, thanks again.

I know the reason, Brother...so, why not just use Alaha, then instead? This is the word that our Savior used as a title of His Father.

Simply put, I usually use ABBA YHWH, however since a lot of English speakers use G-d or L-rd, I am used to typing those two words the way I do so as not to offend anyone.

Thanks again.

I understand Bro, but, what if it offends some others if you put a dash between the G" and "d" or the dash between the "L and "rd".... <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->

Consider this:

M'Shikha used the word/term "Alaha" when referring to His Father as "God", so, it should be no offense to anyone who sees it. It might spark their interest and then you could tell them what the original form of the term that was used by M'Shikha, and His Shlikha, when they referred to ABBA.

I've never run across anyone who was offended by me doing so, however if I do I will merely tell them the origins of the two terms and allow them to understand my reasoning.

You say "it should be no offense" however it very well could be offensive to anyone that doesn't know or care about the Aramaic texts. They could possibly think you were "lording" what you perceive is "special knowledge" over them.

It's really a none issue to me.

Peace.
