Hebrews 4:16
#1
Shlama to all,

Hebrews 4:16 is a powerful verse for spiritual encouragement particularly during tough times. In my efforts to soak up the richness of the Greek and Aramaic texts on this verse, I noticed that the King James Version is rather shortsighted compared to the work of Charles Van der Pool. The Peshitta Text of this verse uses the word "aoltsana" while the Greek uses the word bo-ay'-thi-ah Aoltsana has a much greater breadth of meaning.

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. (King James Version)

Let us come forward then with confidence to the throne of favor, that we should receive mercy, and should find favor for opportune help. (Charles Van der Pool's Apostolic Bible Polyglot)

Let us therefore approach with confidence [With revealed eye.] to the throne of his grace, that we may receive mercy,[Mercies.] and find grace for help in the time of affliction. (John Wesley Etheridge)

Notice the interesting Aramaic idiom, "with revealed eye", that "mercy" is plural - "mercies", and "aoltsana" has for one of its meanings "affliction." The other meanings are found here....

The entry for William Jennings' Syriac Lexicon is at the very bottom... http://www.dukhrana.com/lexicon/Jenning ... //0015.jpg

The entry from the Comprehensive Aramaic Lexicon has these details...

1 straits, calamity Syr, LJLA. --(a) fig. of famine Syr, LJLA. --(b) siege Syr.
2 necessity, compulsion Syr.
3 narrowness, difficulty Syr.

I'll have to take this into account during my Etheridge revision.

I would not choose the alternate meaning since the Christian of this word, which is -mostly- translated as affliction by Etheridge and Murdock.

Like here: and when affliction (uwlsana)or persecution occurs on account of the doctrine (Matthew 13:21)

This affliction is what Jeshu was talking about and we see it used in Hebrews 4:16.
