"Let no (pagan) therefore judge you..."
#1
"Let no (pagan) therefore judge you about food and drink, or about the distinctions of festivals and new moons and Shabbats."- Colossians 2:16, Aramaic-English New Testament

"Let no man therefore create a disturbance among you about eating and drinking, or about the division of the feast days, the beginning of the months and the day of the Sabbath."- Colossians 2:16, Lamsa Bible

Which translation of the verse is more accurate to the Peshitta text? The thing that makes me wonder if the fact that the Lamsa translation omits the word "pagan", while Roth has it in the text of the AENT. Is Roth's translation in this verse biased?

The word "pagan" does not exist in the Aramaic text, nor is it even implied in the context of the passage...as The Apostle Paul is speaking to believers in The Messiah who find themselves misjudged by other believers in The Messiah, who believed that they must remain in Judaism to be right with God.

That's always been my interpretation of this verse, myself. This is a pretty minor "bias" in the translation, but Roth probably shouldn't have added to this verse (even though he did use parenthesis, showing that this was his interpretation).

Based on what I have read from Andrew in the past, it seems to be his belief that this type of verse is speaking of those who are trying to keep the Law, who are being judged by those who do not...those who are called "anti-nomian" by those who believe they are keeping the Law.

I have even read the term "Christo-Pagan"...referring to Christians that do not hold to the Netzari beliefs. Which I say is a terrible term.

I agree. I haven't seen much problem with the translation itself (which I adore) but I don't care much for his theology.

It should be better to translate it like Murdock did
Let no one therefore disquiet you about food and drink...

This is in harmony with Galatians 5:7 where the same word is used, it is not 'judge' but 'trouble'.
The trouble was brought by converted Pharizees, who teached other converts (In Galatia e.g.) to keep the law and other Thora law.

Thanks to James Murdoch, Paul Younan, Steven Silver, and Andrew Roth, we have a pretty literal version of the Eastern and Western Peshitta and Peshitto...and as long as his (Andrews) particular ologies are taken into account, it can be a rather good resource. At times better than David Bauschers work...but I still find Janet Magiera's translation truer to the text in most respects and her resource helps are fantastic to study the Original.

But you still can't beat Dukhrana.com to hear what God said through His Apostles...

Too me...translations are like a painters interpretation as they see the original work. It's always best to look close at the Original work to get the purest details. <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->

Again, thanks for the link! I'll try to take a look at it later. The Aramaic pronunciation of the vowels in Roth's "prepper" is sometimes pretty unclear.

I personally think it refers to anybody in general, who has a problem with keeping God's law. Why would Paul loosely throw in "Sabbaths" if he was referring to a group of things that had no real importance/significance like you guys say he was. Yeshua came to fulfill the law, not destroy it.

Not too sound all "Nazarenely plasticky" and start preaching, but reading the New Testament only supports all the Torah laws and festivals that were to be kept FOREVER.

If you dont have to keep Sabbath or adhere to the old testament laws, then really, you dont have to do jack squat. Just do whatever you want and when you want (i.e. go murder your neighbor after you rob a few banks) and make sure to pray for forgiveness at the end of the day with your fingers crossed.

The Scripture cleary says there..."therefore let no man disturb you..." So that would include you, me, or any pagan person who might try to trouble or disturb us, who are reconciled by God, through and by the atoning sacrifice of Messiah...about which laws we are to keep or not keep, under the New and better Covenant...

And who said anything about not keeping the laws that apply under the New and better Covenant? Not me....Do some really think that normal spiritually born of God people would think that is the way they should live unto God? Hope not.

The Apostle Paul has a context there, in which he is dealing with this issue. It's best to look at that context and also see the whole picture regarding what was taking place at the time he lived and preached to his generation. This was written to people alive back then, who were dealing with that issue...and it can apply to us today, if there is a situation that's the same.

Here is a reality check....Rungold, which laws are you breaking and having to seek God's forgivness for on a weekly basis? If not murder or robbery?...And based upon what exactly does God forgive you of those law breaking sins...your efforts?

No need to answer here, just something to ponder.

Chuck

I believe that we are under Torah, but not under the Mosaic Torah. We are under the Torah of Christ. The New Testament has been given as a New Covenant to every believer in Jesus Christ, whether Jewish or Gentile. We are blessed to be under the Law of Jesus.
