Hi BVT,

In that text, the Name of God (YH) in Its shortened form with the sign of the Triune Nature above It, which is a symbol of the Church of the East. The script is Eastern Aramaic.

The text reads:

(Lakh, Tawa w'Baseema) You, (O) Good and Pleasant One,
(w'Khannana w'Mele Rakhme) Gracious, and Full of Mercies,
(Malka Rabba d'Teshbokhta) (O) Great (and) Praiseworthy King,
(Mawdeenan) We Beseech
(w'Saghdeenan) And Worship
(wa'Mshab'khenan) And Praise.

Dear Paul Younan if you know any tradition associated with this type of cross in middle east please share ..

The interpretation of the Pahlavi Script is as follows:

"My Lord Christ, have mercy upon Afras son of Chaharbukht the Syrian, who cut this (or, who caused this to be cut)."

On another cross, there is this additional sentence in Estrangelo Syriac. (Galatians 6:14)
?May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.?

The inscription at another church when translated is,
?I, the beautiful bird of Nineveh has come to this land. Written by me Shapper, who was saved by the Holy Messiah from misery.?

Hi BVT,

You're welcome. I'm afraid I cannot help with Pahlavi, or with Chinese. (sorry) <!-- sSad --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/sad.gif" alt="Sad" title="Sad" /><!-- sSad -->

The cross is in the "Nestorian" style, and it is found all over India and the rest of Asia due to the missionary activity of the Church of the East during the early centuries of Christianity. Before the Portuguese arrived and converted the faithful in India, the Church of the East was the branch of the Church there. There still is a presence in India of the CoE, but the majority were either forcefully converted to the Latin rite, or entered into communion with the Syrian Orthodox.

Wow, that's a beautiful church. The layout (minus the icons) is in the style of the typical CoE.
