For the Friday of Sorrows
#1
In the month of Nisan our Lord repaid
the debts of that first Adam:

He gave His sweat in Nisan
in exchange for Adam's sweat,

His Cross,
in exchange for Adam's tree.

The sixth day of the week corresponded to
the sixth day of creation

and it was 'at the turn of the day'
that He returned the thief to Eden.

Our Lord subdued His might
and they seized Him,

so that His living death
might give life to Adam.

He gave His hands to be pierced by the nails,
in place of that hand that had plucked the fruit.

He was struck on the cheek in the judgement hall,
in return for that mouth that had devoured in Eden.

Because Adam had let slip his foot,
they pierced His feet.

Our Lord was stripped naked,
so that we may be clothed in modesty.

With gall and vinegar He made sweet,
that bitter venom the serpent had poured into humanity.

Mar Ephraem, 306-373 AD.
