i've not been able to find any official ruling against drinking, other than the United Methodist Church asking that those of that path not drink during this time. so perhaps you're good to go on your similar idea...

I just bottled some home brew myself last week. CoE guidelines involve animal products and eggs, butter, etc. I just use barley, water, hops and yeast.

I must say, not trying to brag here, the recipe I use is pretty yummy.

that's great! i've yet to take the plunge into home-brewing, but i've been very tempted to try it, and browse the online HB forums quite often, dreaming. it seems overwhelming at this point.

so what style is your brew?

i'm particularly fond of the Belgian ales (Affligem, Orval), and am now really starting to enjoy the sours (Duchesse de Bourgogne = i'm drooling), and especially geueze lambics.

Belgians definitely make the best beer in the world. I try and imitate the Trappist monk tradition and flavoring. Westvleteren 12 is my favorite. Here's a pic of my last batch of caramel-ly goodness. I ran out rather quickly at a family gathering when everyone kept asking for refills. ;(

ah- the Westy! i've not yet had one, but the reviews i've seen make them look wonderful! i try to stay up to date with the enjoyable reviewer at thehopry.com -- check it out if you haven't seen it.

and no pic is showing edit: there now, ignore this

so will we see a Younan's Peshitta ale in the future? -- YPA instead of IPA?

Ha! I'm going to make labels and call it Babylon Brew. I'm thinking of starting a monastic order in Iraq and convert it to a brewery...not sure if the Muslim neighbors will appreciate it, though.

The taste is not quite there yet as far as imitating the "West" 12. Almost though. I became intent on recreating it after it nearly broke the bank. It's so expensive. You can get the authorized clone of it at a finer liquor store, like Binny's Beverage Depot. I think it's called "Abt 12", made by the St. Bernadus brewery. Still very pricey, though. But well worth it.

Going home to have a glass now....cheers!

Shlama,

Babylon Brew!! nice. yeah, you may have some issues with that in Iraq... if it doesn't work out, there's always North Texas
Abt 12 i've seen at a market i frequent in Fort Worth, so i'll have to try some now for sure. i don't mind at all paying more for the stuff that is actually worth swallowing! if one's beer tastes like it is the product of what would happen if the finer ales had kidneys and the contents of them had been drained and bottled, then i see no point in drinking it! life's too short to abuse one's palate when it comes to drinking. Messiah gave us that fine example at the famous wedding.

Akhi I just picked up some Abt 12 from Binny's. The really do make it like the original monastery This is just like the original west recipe. Definitely pick some up, it's the best taste.

Up here in the communist land of Illinois it's 13 dollars a bottle. Which is why I started trying to imitate it.

I'm moving to Texas some day. Will start a CoE parish when I get there. It's unlivable up here.

Send me your address via pm. Maybe I can find a way to legally ship you a bottle from a future batch of the home brew. Be honest with me. If you don't like it let me know, if you like it it's $50 a bottle.

Shlama akhi Paul,

my second son is due in about a month, so getting my hands on an Abt 12 sounds like a good way to celebrate!

you're welcome down here in Texas, and i'd love have a CoE parish within driving distance! i think there is one in South Texas, but that is like a 4-5 hour's drive, so for now it is out of the question...

definitely look for my pm! they sent people to the moon, so there's got to be a way to get your version to the Lone Star state!
