Acts 7:43 - Quoting LXX

Is this verse coming from the Septuagint? I don't find Molokh/Malkhum or Remfan/Refan in the Hebrew of Amos 5:26 or the Aramaic targumim thereof.

According to the online bible thesaurus..

I woinder if Remphan (which I presume is in the GNT) can be due to coming from the peshitta rather than the LXX

Interesting...I didn't actually look at this reference contextually when I posted this.
But I can believe this one: Stephen made an impromptu targum of Amos 5:26.
If it's the case that the Peshitta influencing the LXX, then this is all quite clear <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->

this is an interesting one for sure! i've finally got some time on my hands w/ spring break to delve deeper into it. let's compare a few of the particulars from different texts:

the Hebrew of Amos 5:26 & 27:
Mal'kem / Kee'uwn / Damaseq (Damascus -- from verse 27)

the Peshitta AN"K of Amos 5:26 & 27:
Milkom / Kuwn / Darmsuwq (Damascus)

the LXX of Amos 5:26 & 27:
Moloch / Raiphan / Damaskou (Damascus)

now, compare the quotation from Acts 7:43----

the Greek texts read:
Moloch / Remphan / Babulenos

the Peshitta reads:
Malkuwm / Rephan / Babel


i would venture to say that this ISN'T a case of the Peshitta quoting from the LXX, and neither is the Greek NT text an exact instance, either, since it ALSO mentions Babylon and not Damascus as do the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, and is also backed up by Targum Jonathan.

furthermore, the Remphan reading of the Greek NT doesn't align with the Raiphan reading of the LXX (which was itself a departure from the transliteration of the former idol name into a dynamic equivalent that alters the flow), or the Rephan reading of the Peshitta NT. obviously the LXX appears to be the candidate for the appearance of the Rephan reading in the Peshitta NT, but since the Peshitta NT ALSO contains the departure from the Hebrew, Peshitta AN"K, and LXX readings of Damascus, one really can't say that the Peshitta IS quoting solely from ANY of the above sources, but seems to be, as you've suggested, simply a personal targum of the Hebrew/Aramaic/Greek, it would seem.

where the reading of Babylon entered the picture is beyond me. it doesn't appear in any of the older texts that i am familiar with, and so it also shows that the Greek is equally at a loss for saying the NT quotes from the LXX. this one seems to be an equal mystery for both sides of the primacy game, if we want to be fair.

at least, those are my perceptions...
