Yeshua and 153 fishes

So....we can find out his miracle in John 21. He spread the net and caught 153 fishes.

I searched the Aramaic scripture and found it was written as "one hundred and fifty and three".

Anyway, what does that mean???? This might be the strangest number in Bible ever.

That's how Aramaic numbers are read/pronounced, we start with the largest number, and then add the second largest, and so on. So there's nothing strange about it.

i'm no fisherman by any means, and i don't know the specifics of trammel nets, but i read somewhere that 153 fishes would not have been a noteworthy catch. so there has got to be something more to it. i've heard various explanations via gematria, ie, beney haEloheem--sons of Elohim, machamadayhem--precious things, cheelqeeYah--Yah's portion, but i'm still left wondering that there is more to be gleaned than a mere numeric value.

Like Jeremy, I've heard a lot of explanations of this. Not just using Gemmatria, but other methods of interpretation, aswell. I'm like y'all, though. I have no idea what to make of it. There are far too many opinions and random ideas and thoughts for me to know what I think.

My fault. I was asking what is the meaning of 153......
I'm Chinese and I do understand the similar situation of numerical expression.
I just wonder why 153 fish was caught.....

Probably the number has several meaning.

Interesting topic!

I believe the announcement of such a specific number is written down with the purpose to raise the interest of the reader; to dig a little deeper to get an overstanding of its meaning.

I would like to share what I've learned and remember concerning the meaning of the 153 fishes.

The passage of Y'hochanan 21 is about the miraculous draught of fishes which happens AFTER the resurrection. The Talmidim of Moshiach Y'hoshua (/Y'shua) did not recognize Him. When He asks them for food they answer they do not have anything, after which He sends them into the sea with their ship to catch fish. The whole night they didn't catch a thing, but now the fishing-nets get so heavy they could hardly carry them out of the water because of the huge fishes they've catched. Being caunted carefully they have 153 fishes...

In Hebrew the word "good" is written "teth" - "vav" - "beyt" 9-6-2; "tov". The word we can read first and several times in Bereshit concerning creation ("and HaShem saw that it were good") after each day of creation, for instance. The sum of the letter-components is 17 (9+6+2= 17). Now, a number is seen as having it's complete 'consummation'/'fulfilment' when every phase along its way to come to that number is being considered and therefore counted as well. The number 17 can be found in many occasions throughout Scripture (and so in the Oral tradition as well).

Living in this world of "two-ness", of duality, of the beyt (the letter which the Tanakh begins with, the 2 which is our "house" in this world), it is often hard for us people to overstand the Oneness of HKB"H and thus the oneness of life. We do not have an overview on what we call "cause and effect". Causes and effects are beyond what we can grasp and be aware of: it belongs to HaShem alone. We hardly know what is before our eyes, being so prejudiced; inclined to judge according to our own standards of good and evil, right or wrong, based on our sense-perception, the external, etc. However, everything is getting judged as HaShem, our loving Heavenly Father will do justice and shall do right; putting everything back in its rightful place; as through a Consuming Fire making everything become truly "tov", good again: "Very good" as I would say. Nothing being forgotten, the whole of life being present again, every phase and aspect being gathered back.

The 153 fishes catched out of the "water", after our Moshiakh has been resurrected, I believe resemble all the phases and moments of His life, catched out of 'time' being brought in for a meal with His Talmidim. The very meaning and/or role of for instance Y'hudah from K'riot, Pilate, Kayafa, etc., etc. A "completed" 17 makes 153 (17+16+15+14+13+12+11+10+9+8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1= 153). Our Moshiakh tells us, with the fishes catched out of the water, during the meal, about the very meaning of eveything that has happened and telling them it is good. Not only the end is to be called "good", but everything as a whole. Everything is resurrected with and through Him. The Eternal Holy One, Blessed Be He, is truly King and so He will fulfill His Will and become All in all (again).

Do you know how many portions are there in triennial Torah reading cycles?
Of course we don't know the real division in ancient service.

While you are on the subject.. I have to ask about the word "great' in the verse.

Does it mean the fish were huge?

or

Does it mean like when a fisherman catches a fish, he quickly categorizes it as either

1.) a great catch, meaning the exact type they were after,
2.) a good catch, meaning that it will do,
3.) a poor catch, meaning that they probably would throw it back as it was not good for eating.

Could it simply be another miracle!
The fish caught were likely Tilapia.
Being classified as ?great? fish probably means that they could have weighed as much as three (3) or more pounds each.
Thus, Peter was pulling in a net?WHICH DID NOT BREAK or TEAR?with four hundred fifty-nine PLUS (459+) pounds of fish in it?equivalent to a large upright piano!

What is the purpose of 153 ? the sign in the net?

The book of John has been called the ?Book of Signs?. It was noted that 153 is the sum of the numbers 1 to 17.
I believe this is a numerical sign, having or indicating, a connection to the numbering of the 666 beast.

Note that Y?shua instructed them to cast the net on the right side.
If you continue the count of the numbers of our current English alphabet from 1 to 26 you will arrive at the sum of 351.

If you ?cast your eyes? from the right side ? the same side that Hebrew is read from ? you will observe ? 153.

Note that Y?shua did not instruct anyone to count the fish, but it is Peter that is associated with the ?counting?.
This whole chapter (John 21) is not about Y?shua or John, but rather Peter seems to be the main character.

You will recall, that other than Satan, the only person Y?shua addressed as Satan was ? Peter. Noted in Matt 16:23, Mark 8:33, Luke 22:31

?Peter? represents the Church of Rome. Not the real Peter, but the one Rome has created ? The Church of Peter. The pope sits in the chair of Peter and wears the ring of Peter.

When pope Paul VI addressed the reporters prior to his United Nations address he enquired ? ?Do you know who I am? My name is Peter?.

The Reformation saints declared that the Church of Rome and its papacy to be the 666 beast of Revelation.

Verily, verily, I say unto thee (Peter) When thou wast young, thou girdedst theyself, and walked whiter thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.

Theologians continue to debate this. Was John just speaking about Peter?s literal death in his old age, or is this a prophetic statement from John speaking about the death of the Church of Peter in its old age?

There are theologians within the Church of Rome that believe this refers to the Church of Rome in its ?old age?, and that their church becomes apostate in the last days. They believe these verses are one indication of that. Also, some Roman Catholic (and Protestant) theologians agree that ?Babylon? in scripture is a reference to papal Rome.

What is the purpose for the number 153 and it?s association with Peter?

APPLY WISDOM = 153

Gematria is not some form of satanic numerology ? in it?s simpliest form it is merely a letter used as a number.

LETTER NUMBER = 153

The word gematria comes from the Greek ?geometria? which has the meaning ? ?earth measures?.

EARTH MEASURES = 153

Is this all just a ?coincidence? ? or is it a creation of Y?shua?

Correction ... I stated that Saul was "changed" to Paul, but Simon was "added" to Peter.

I meant to say ... the name or word "peter" was added to Simon.

The word "peter" is small stone ... and small stones were used for "counting" in Biblical times.

I believe the papal peter is the 666 numbered or counted beast of Revelation 13:18
