Compendious Syriac Dictionary
#1
Shlama Forum:
Lars Lindgren has been busy. It is such a privilege to work with him at Dukhrana. His latest "innovative invention" is the addition of Payne Smith's Compendious Syriac Dictionary as a user friendly search engine when analyzing any word in the Peshitta New Testament.

Check it out!

shlom lokh oH Stephen,

I just checked it out; it is a great addition and will be very useful and time saving (i.e. it will help out the the handicaps of the SEDRA3 DB.)

The work that you and Lars are doing is very much appreciated! Congratulation!

Shlama,

Please also check out this other useful tool :-)

It has not officially gone "live" yet, so consider it a sneak-preview. I would love it if you guys could try it out and let me know what you think. Please don't hesitate to report any bugs you might encounter!

I tried out the sneak peek, and it works great and it is very responsive. I can't imaging the time that you must have spent indexing the words in the PS Lexicon; You've made a very good choice in choosing the PS lexicon to make searchable.

Excellent work!

Shlama lokh akh Keefa-Morun,

It is, as a matter of fact, a lot less work than you can imagine, especially if you use a few tricks :-] Only one word per page is actually indexed. So in a sense the whole approach thing is quite simplistic. Searching for words not in the dictionary will (ideally) make you end up on the page containing the words that matches your search the closest, etc.

I've also noticed a few minor bugs that I'm gonna try and squeeze out, but overall it seems to be working pretty, pretty, pretty good <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->

That's a good idea, it minimizes lookup time. <!-- sBig Grin --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/happy.gif" alt="Big Grin" title="Happy" /><!-- sBig Grin -->

I'm not sure if you'll have the time or not, but there's another dictionary that is available which is also of great value. It is written in Estrangelo, with minimum eastern vowel punctuation. It 's more suitable to someone that is familiar with the Syriac-Aramaic language.

Shlama!

That would make a great addition to dukhrana. But it seems like I would need special premission from Brigham Young University in order to use their scanned pages of the dictionary. Otherwise, without their permission I would have to scan the pages myself, which in itself is a pretty time consuming process! Maybe all of this can be a future project when I have more time... or if someone else would like to give a helping hand :-)

shlom lokh akh Lars,

That is too bad, I read their copyright notice, and it would seem to permit it while deny it at the same time.

But luckily for us they've just included Vol2 and Vol3 on archive.org (Hopefully we'll eventually see vol1):
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.archive.org/details/lexiconsyriacum02hassuoft">http://www.archive.org/details/lexicons ... 02hassuoft</a><!-- m --> <= Vol2
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.archive.org/details/lexiconsyriacum03hassuoft">http://www.archive.org/details/lexicons ... 03hassuoft</a><!-- m --> <= Vol3

But like you said this can definitely be a future project.

Nice! Now I just need to find a good free utility to split each page in those PDFs into single PDFs, then convert them into jpegs and we should be halfway there.... :-)

shlom lokh akh Lars,

Try the following program, I haven't tried it yet, but it seems promising:

Shlama lokh akh Keefa-Morun,

Thanks for the tip! I took a closer look at it, but unfortunately it wasn't as good as it first seemed.

Me being a UN*X type of guy I figured that there must be many good solutions out there that would solve this task. I have now found two equally great software packages that not only does what I want, but also does it really well and are extremely flexible and supports tons of tweakable features :-)

I'm talking about PDFtk (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.accesspdf.com/pdftk/index.html">http://www.accesspdf.com/pdftk/index.html</a><!-- m -->) and ImageMagick (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php">http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php</a><!-- m -->).
