Peshitta Time-Line
#1
Shlama Lars and Paul:
What is the definitive timeline for the reception of the Peshitta in Babylon, Ctesipon, Nineveh, and finally Kerala (Malabar)? Where are the sources for this timeline and where can I get the most precise information?
We're looiking at 50 A.D. for Babylon and about 53 A.D. when Mar Thoma arrived in India.

Stephen

Shlama Akhi Stephen,

Nineveh (Adiabene) may have been the earliest for a few reasons. Number one: traveling up the fertile crescent to go downward towards Babylonia (to avoid the desert) you would run into northern Mesopotamia first. Second, the kingdom of Adiabene had already converted to Judaism prior to the Apostles coming, so it was fertile ground for the Message.

The earliest account we have of the timelines involved at Arbela come to us from the Chronicle of Arbela, of which there is a partial translation from Aramaic online.

Shimon Keepa arrived in Babylon later according to tradition. Thomas and his disciples (Mari and Addai) evangelized old Assyria~Adiabene first, then Babylonia and then eastward to Persia and India. Peter later visited (and wrote his epistle from) the already existing community there. So perhaps they had copies of at least the Gospels prior to his arrival.

Unfortunately, none of the historical accounts gives us an indication either way on this topic.

Shlama Akhi Paul:
This is good. I suggest that this particular thread is critical and I would like to continue to probe along these lines. Now it makes perfect sense that the Gospels, were completed first and just as Jonah shared the "good news" to Nineveh Malkhuta Khadyab (I'm taking a stab at the pronunciation) that they must repent, so Mar Thoma and whomever else did the very same, following that pattern. Perhaps we can find historical clues that may shed light on the original path.

Shlama,
Stephen
