The book 'Turgame' (ktabha d'turgame)
#1
Shlama alaykhon,

Me and my wife have picked up the book "Turgame" (0mgrwtd 0btk) in order to more closely study the parts written by Mar Yosip Khnanisho. However, we have some general questions regarding this book and its origin. We hope that someone here might be able to help us ... (looks at Paul ).

1) How and when is the book used within the Church of the East?

2) Except for Mar Yosip Khnanisho, which other people have their texts included?

3) For how long have this book been used by the Church? How old is the oldest material it contains?

4) Are the original manuscripts that were used for the making of the book still in existence?

Shlama Akhan Lars & Khatan Sonia,

Lars Lindgren Wrote:1) How and when is the book used within the Church of the East?

The book of Turgame is mainly used by the Mshamshane (Shamashe~deacons) and/or the choir.

The first section (through page 80) is composed of Acrostic hymns based on the Gospel Hymn ("O ye who believe...") and are variations on that in the modern vernacular Aramaic.

The second section (pp. 81-112) is the "Takhsa d'Mshamshane" ("Order of the Deacons"). It lays out the specific chants and hymns the deacons sing during various parts of the liturgical cycle.

The third section (pp. 113-203) concerns the readings that are to be done on the Bema during the various feast days and memorials.

The fourth section (pp. 204-217) are various hymns by different authors (some anonymous or unknown.)

The final page, 218, is the Aramaic translation of the Nicene Creed.

Lars Lindgren Wrote:2) Except for Mar Yosip Khnanisho, which other people have their texts included?

Mar Yosip authored several, like the hymn on p. 121. Other hymns are included from Mar Narsai (pp. 114, 120, 204, 214, etc.) Parts are attributed to Mar Bawai the Great (p. 115). Mostly, though, from Mar Narsai.

Lars Lindgren Wrote:3) For how long have this book been used by the Church? How old is the oldest material it contains?

Well, the book itself as a compilation is fairly new (last century), however the material inside contains hymns from Mar Narsai and Mar Bawai, making them very old of course.

The introduction mentions the book was compiled from the copy held by Mshamshana (Shamasha) Gewargis de'Beth Benyamin, so I would imagine that his immediate family still holds the copies. I do believe they are (or, were) in Iraq.

Shlama Akhan Paul!

Thank you so much for answering, and for answering so quickly! This is exactly the kind of information we were looking for. Sonia made sure I tell you that she thinks you're an angel!

By the way, which e-mail address is best to reach you at? I only have your work e-mail, but I seem to have trouble getting in touch with you when I use that one. Do you have another one I can try? You can reply privately to my @dukhrana.com address, the one that begins with ljl.

All the best!

Akhan Lars, we miss Sonia and your presence at Mar Yukhanna Church!

BTW - we have a new Qasha now (Qasha Antwan), because Qasha Klutz retired. I believe Qasha Antwan was recently in your corner of the world, since he is accompanying the Patriarch on his visit to Europe.

Here is Qasha Antwan giving a speech (love this man!)

I did get your email - still trying to think of a good topic for you to explore. Perhaps the evolution of the Dual (now mainly missing) in modern Neo-Aramaic?

We keep in touch with Qasha Klutz quite regulary via e-mail, so we are well informed of his retirement and that Qasha Antwan will take over. I have to say that I think Qasha Antwan is perfect to take over where Qasha Klutz left off. It is not easy to replace someone so special as Q. Klutz! Also, I have to add that Mar Yukhanna Church and all the wonderful people there will always have a special place in our hearts. We hope we will be able to once again become an active part of your lovely parish in the future.

We met Qasha Antwan a couple of times when he was visiting here together with the Patriarch. Both at the welcoming dinner in Norsborg, Sweden, and also when the Patriarch came home to visit my in-laws.

IshtarTV has some pictures from the dinner party: http://www.ishtartv.com/news,3809.html (see if you recognize me ) I gave a small speech at the welcoming dinner party, as Bishop Mar Odisho Oraham wanted to make it official that he has given me the honor to help translate parts of the liturgy into Swedish, and also that they have plans to, God willing, one day make me into a Shamasha. I wish they could send me to Chicago and let me study under you and Qasha Antwan ;-) Maybe you can arrange something ;-)

Doh! Seems we are waaaay off-topic now, so I better stop!

I see you! Looked like a great time!

Wow - the two best voices in the CoE, Mar Oraham and Qasha Antwan in the same building. Hopefully you caught a service with the two of them together, can't imagine how that sounded. I'm mesmerized by their voices. You've heard mine, unfortunately. I need voice lessons from Qasha Antwan.

When you become Shamasha Lars (God willing), I want to be there. The translation of the liturgy into Swedish will be a major milestone for the CoE.

Basima raba akhan Paul!

They both truly have incredible voices. Libban patekh when we hear them sing. Do you have any of Mar Odisho's CDs?

Absolutely, I have the one volume that contains the Ma'adrasha of Adam, Emar 'Li Edtha, etc. Are there any others you are aware of?

The most recent CD we have is one where he sings (and plays the piano/synth) together with Suaad Elias called "Shabkhoon Lmarya Min Shmaya". But I believe he might have released another one also or that it might still be in the workings and soon to be released...
