Anyone know aramaic, or write it fluently?
#1
I'm looking for a translation of the phrase "Trust in the lord" or the word "persevere" into aramaic. I have tried pulling it from proverbs 3:5 but the sentence structure is messed up and I would love to get this right. If anyone thinks they can help let me know, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob,

Many people here are capable, however we would need to know first if your plan is to get a tattoo. <!-- s:biggrin: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/biggrin.gif" alt=":biggrin:" title="Big Grin" /><!-- s:biggrin: -->

:-) My uncanny deductive reasoning skills, are telling me that this is not the first inquiry that has been made by someone hehe... I will absolutely not lie to you all, I am hoping to get a tattoo, of a cross on my right forearm with the inscription, "Trust in the Lord", or "Persevere" underneath it, always to remind me of who my work is fork. Is this against a custom or religious belief that I am unaware of, of course I will respect your decision regardless, and will not press the issue either way. I ask only because of my wish to understand.

Thanks, :-)

Hi Rob and welcome to the forum!

It's not up to me to tell you what is against my personal convictions, it's just a kind of running joke around here. Yes, I can give you the translation - are you looking for a specific font?

Actually if people are in fact this helpful, I would love to know more about Aramaic, and the language Christ spoke, with regards to what is most accurate, etc before making any such decision. That is of course if you have the time :-).

Thanks,

Provided the font doesn't make a difference, A link to the pic of the tatoo I created is at

Choice A) <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~rf325403/other/Cross.gif">http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~rf325403/other/Cross.gif</a><!-- m -->
Choice B) <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~rf325403/other/Cross-mod.gif">http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~rf325403/other/Cross-mod.gif</a><!-- m -->

You can ignore the hebrew beneath the cross's. The difference between the two cross's is the top left side of the cross, is curved versus straight.

What font do you think would look best? Also, the whole point of the text is to remind me of who my hands are working for.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob,

The phrase "Trust in the LORD" - we can have a bit of variation depending on your preference. Firstly, let's talk about the fonts.

Aramaic has been traditionally written in several different fonts. Do you want to emulate what most likely was written during the time of Christ? Or how about the earliest script we know of? Or the latest modern script? Or one of the various "Hebrew" script? You have lots of choices.

Secondly, when you say "trust" - are you speaking to a 2nd person singular or plural? Or a 3rd person singular or plural? Or is this an imperative, being spoken to you by someone else in the singular .... or the plural?

Third - what word do you want to use for "Lord" - there is a version that is reserved in Aramaic for God alone and actually incorporates His Name. Then there is a more generic "Lord."

Hmm... well lets start with the font. Yea, the font most likely used by Christ would be amazing.

Quote:Secondly, when you say "trust" - are you speaking to a 2nd person singular or plural? Or a 3rd person singular or plural? Or is this an imperative, being spoken to you by someone else in the singular .... or the plural?

When I say trust, it's mainly a reminder to me, as in, Rember Rob, Trust in him, trust in your faith, it's more of a command to myself.

Quote:Third - what word do you want to use for "Lord" - there is a version that is reserved in Aramaic for God alone and actually incorporates His Name. Then there is a more generic "Lord."

For God, that's an interesting question. What would christ have use to refer to the Lord? Refer to God, the Father, I'm not atually sure, I'm not sure what word Christ would have used, or whether this is different in Aramaic. I would ideally like to use, whatever Christ would have used when saying Lord, meaning father. I would think it would be an intimate reference to our Father, our Lord, Creator, Lover of our souls... What are your ideas?

Thanks for all your help, you all are amazing.
