Kandisa
#1
I am posting in this forum because I read that Aramaic is still used in the Church of the East.

A group called ???Indian Ocean??? has come out with an ancient song in Aramaic called ???Kandisa???. This is the website where I found and purchased the song/hymn: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://ww.smashits.com/music/pop/songs/4551/kandisa.html">http://ww.smashits.com/music/pop/songs/ ... ndisa.html</a><!-- m -->

This is where I found the lyrics: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://vaibhav.livejournal.com/90031.html">http://vaibhav.livejournal.com/90031.html</a><!-- m -->.

I have been trying to find a translation. The closest I got was this: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.zimblymallu.com/2005/02/kandisa-translation.html">http://www.zimblymallu.com/2005/02/kand ... ation.html</a><!-- m -->

I wrote to ???Indian Ocean??? in hopes that they might help me, but they said that they had not been able to find one because the language is no longer spoken. The story is that an angel taught it to Joseph of Arimathea and that it was used at Jesus??? burial. They asked me to send them a translation if I ever found one.

It is so beautiful to listen to. I wondered if anyone on your forum would be knowledgeable enough to come up with a translation. In any case, I hope that it strengthens you as it has strengthened me.

Hey Mary, welcome to the forum. The song is beautiful, the words are severely mis-pronounced though, which may be why people are having a hard time translating it. From what I heard in the song, it's clear that these are verses out of the liturgical setting in the Church of the East:

Qad-dee-sha A-la-ha (Holy God)
Qad-dee-sha Khail-tha-na (Holy Mighty One)
Qad-dee-sha La Ma-yo-tha (Holy Immortal)
Ith-Rakh-Hem Al-Lain (Have Mercy upon us)

Shlee-kha Mar Yoseph, Al Mad-bkha d'Qudsha ((to) St. Joseph, upon the Holy Altar)
Neh-weh Dukh-ran-na (Let there be a memorial)

Alam, alam, etc. (forever and ever)
Amen wa'Amen (Amen and Amen)

Dear Paul,

Thank you so much! I recognized parts of the hymn from a chant which I remember as being part of the Sacred Triduum. It was the part about Joseph that was not a part of that chant as I remember it.

I am presuming that you will not mind if I send the translation link to "Indian Ocean". It is something they asked me to do - probably didn't think I would, but I am persistent...

Thank you again.

Not at all, there's one verse of about 3-4 words I couldn't get at all from the vocals alone, so it is a tad bit incomplete.
