Under 'tan' (Teith-Nun) in the Compendious Syriac Dictionary, I have- to envy, be jealous, to be moved or burn with jealousy, zeal, zealous desire, emulation, indignation with [font=Estrangelo (V1.1)]b [/font].
My personal preference in the verses you mentioned, considering context, would be 'jealous'. Maybe akhan Paul feels differently, though, and could educate us both on this. <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s -->
