AramaicNT.org FlashDEX Public Beta!
#1
Shlomo akhai,

I've been posting this all over the place, so I figure I might as well post it here, too :-)

( <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.AramaicNT.org/FLASHDEX">http://www.AramaicNT.org/FLASHDEX</a><!-- m --> )

For the past week I've been working on a project for AramaicNT.org and is has finally gone public.

The FlashDEX is a fully web-based flash-card system for the Aramaic language, whose purpose is to facilitate and accelerate the learning process. Each user can set up a personal account, and (in the future) choose which language they wish to learn Aramaic in. Currently, only English is supported, but if we can get some French, Spanish, German, etc. encoders to help work on the project, we can go multi-lingual.

The learning system is based upon Lessons, sets of words grouped under a common theme. Currently, in the Beta, three lessons are available: The Alphabet, Mark 1:1-5 and Mark 1:6-10. The Lessons are in an expandable XML format, which allows for rapid lesson creation, and quick parsing by the program.

When a lesson begins, the user is prompted with an Aramaic word with a button under it labeled to display the answer. The user then must guess the meaning, and click the button. The answer is then displayed, which consists of the word's pronunciation, meaning, part of speech, and root along with two more options: Was the user correct? Or was he wrong? Clicking the appropriate button displays a new word, and after 30 repetitions of this process, the user can then choose to leave the lesson and it's score will be tallied.

All scores after lessons are displayed in three readouts:

1) The raw data
-This shows every word in the lesson, and a color-coded percentage bar detailing how well you did with your answers.

2) The list of data
-The color coding is determined by the computer and displays how well the program thinks you know this word based upon your current lesson. The list shows how many are in each of the groupings.

3) The letter grade
-A simple overall percentage assigns a letter grade, in accordance to standard grading procedures. (For example a 100% is an A+, an 80% is a B-, etc. ).

All three of these are counted towards your cumulative lesson scores, and in order to "Pass" a lesson, one must have at least 80% correct in all of Lesson responses and have logged more than 100 guesses. You can continue doing any lesson regardless of whether or not you've passed it, and lessons that you have yet to take are shown in a separate menu, so you don't confuse the two.

Cumulative scores for lessons and overall performance are available, and you can sort your viewing by how you've done on the them (for example, if you wish to see all the words you have yet to be tested on, or if you want to see all words that you've passed, or if you want to see all words that you're weak on and below). The same menu where this feature is also has a function for generating vocabulary sheets and flashcards that you can print and cut out.

Other features that are in the making are as follows:
-Full international support (the support is there, the coders however are not).
-Aramaic "Study Buddy" system.
-Email notification of "Semester results"
-Certificates of achievement for high test scores.
-And hopefully, one day, Accreditation.

The software is available at <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.AramaicNT.org/FLASHDEX">http://www.AramaicNT.org/FLASHDEX</a><!-- m -->

The Public Beta is free for all who want to use it, but after Beta the basic program will remain free with enough vocabulary and grammar to get anyone who is interested in Aramaic up on their feet, but due to the amount of time and effort it takes to put this project together and maintain it, extra lessons will be available at a small fee of about $10 a month. Please believe me when I say that it will be worth it, as the money that comes in from paying users goes directly into the software's development.

If you have any questions, please post them at the AramaicNT.org Yahoo! Group:
