Wasn't the Peshitta produced by Rabbula of Edessa?
#3
I can only guess to what his motive was. Of course, Voobus remained a Greek primacist for his entire life. In absence of a willingness to consider it as the primary text of the NT - he needed to show some sort of history behind it.

Unfortunately for him, what he criticized Burkitt for is exactly what he turned around and did himself.

He gave no historical proof of his theory of the Peshitta being a revision of Old Scratch. What he did do was take the leading theory at the time (that the Western Greek is the oldest text) and apply it to the history of the Aramaic manuscripts. Since the Old Scratch is a "Western-type" text, whereas the Peshitta agrees more with the Byzantine Greek, then according to his logic the Peshitta must therefore have been a revision of the Old Scratch to bring it into line with the Greek Byzantine text.

Of course, this hypothesis begs the question. It assumes:

(1) That the Greek (!) text of the "Western" family is the original
(2) That there was somebody at some time who revised the Old Syriac into what we now know as the Peshitta

Neither he nor anyone else whom I've studied has ever offered one bit of evidence that is convincing of either claim. There is absolutely no historical proof of any of that happening - and, as Voobus himself so eloquently stated:

"This kind of reconstruction of textual history is pure fiction without a shred of evidence to support it"

If the Old Scratch was the original, then the Church of the East would have kept and venerated it rather than any "revision" of it. Being in the Persian empire and independent of the maniacal Byzantines, they could give a rat's *expletive* what the official "Byzantine Greek" text was.

Finally, we have posted several examples (and I could post a lot more) where we demonstrate that the Peshitta could NOT have been revised from Old Scratch towards the "Byzantine" Greek. (search the Aramaic Primacy 101 forum).
