Eastern variant ?!?!?
#1
Shlama Akhay,

After reviewing the discussion between akhan Paul and akha Yuri concerning variants, this is the closest thing I've seen to a true Eastern texts variant. I'm not real sure but maybe William Norton is not referring to an Eastern versus Western situation here. I'll quote him and let someone else fill in the details...

*****(WILLIAM NORTON wrote)***********
In 1 Cor. v. 8, some Syriac copies have, "with the leaven," instead of, "with the unleavened [bread]," etc. *****(END OF QUOTE)******

With all of the negative press that the word 'leaven' has gotten, I'd like to think that the 'unleavened [bread]' motif is a much more snug fit when you remember Yeshua's admonitions...'beware of the leaven of Herod'...'beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Saducees'...etc. Also the Apostle Paul spoke of the 'old leaven' and of the 'leaven of malice and wickedness.'

Among the copies that William Norton compares are (1) Maronite (2) Lee (3) Ooroomiah (4) Walton (5) Gutbier (6) Schaaf

Do we have a true Eastern variant here, akhi Paul, or is this another East versus West among Syriac copies?

Shlomo oh Larry,

Both Official Peshitto and Peshitta have an identical reading.
The word used is "Leaven".

Shlama Akhi Larry,

Every eastern and western copy I've checked read "leaven." ("khmeera")

Of the manuscripts listed by Norton, the only one I can positively identify as eastern is the "Ooroomiah" because that is the town in Iran where Lamsa was born (definitely Persian.)

Does Norton give any indication which manuscript it is that reads "unleavened?"

No, he doesn't akhi, and I've tried to get some more insight from different keyword searches and have scored a big zero unfortunately.

What makes this such an interesting example is not only is there so much negativity ascribed to leaven by Yeshua and Paul but the reference in 1st Cor. 5:8 seems to allude very strongly to the Feast of Unleavened Bread from what I gather. I'm wondering if the placement or conception of the 'la' negative is the only real problem here either way. 'not with leaven' versus 'not leavened.'

Shlama Akhi Larry,

I thought of that too (confusing the "ela" with the "la" negative) but the problem there would be the Beth Proclitic on "leaven".....it wouldn't work as a scribal error.

I think the "leaven" makes more sense, anyhow. "...not with the leaven of evil or bitterness, but with the leaven of holiness, etc."
