Colossians 2:15
#1
Paul,

Could you give me a literal translation of Colossians 2:15? Trimm translates it as "And by the putting off of His body He exposed principalities and powers and shamed them openly in His person." Which of these terms should be transliterated "qnoma", "His body" or "His person"?

I'd also like to ask for a translation of Colossians 2:17 in which the word "substance" is used (in the NASB). I'm sorry for bring up "qnoma" again but I remain fascinated by the idea.

Hi Akhi Keith,

No prob! Colossians 2:15 is translated:

Colossians 2:15 Wrote:"And by the putting off of his body, he shamed the principalities and powers, embarassing them openly by his Qnoma."

Trimm's translation follows the Way International's verbatim, except for the last word. The Way's version translates "Qnomeh" as "himself", while Trimm translates "his person."

Also, both translate Yrsp as "expose." While it can mean "to expose", it can also mean "to shame" somebody - which I think is more contextually correct for this verse.

I think Paul was playing on the synonyms Yrsp "shame" and thb "embarass."

For Colossians 2:17, the Aramaic word used there means "body." I think the NASB translation from the Greek is very liberal, as they even footnote the literal meaning of "body" in the Greek.

PS - have you checked out the usage of the terms Qnoma and Kyana in the ancient hymn "Bereavement of Adam" in the CoE forum? <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->
