This site below gives some interesting alternatives on the whole issue:
http://www.srr.axbridge.org.uk/syriac_intro.html
Any thoughts on the proposed meanings?

But is it possible Steve-o that the reference to 'eloi' and 'eli' could be to something else and not God? What are the variant meanings of the word 'el'? Could it not possibly mean 'i'm tired' or 'woe' like the author there suggests is possible?

Assuming that you are a trinitarian Steve-o [correct me if I am wrong about that] if Yshu is god then how can he ask himself if he has been forsaken? I don't think we should abandon other possible meanings of these words

Quote:The point is that he did not ask if he was forsaken. Many of the alternate meanings on that website are bogus, and the ones that are possible are highly improbable. :-)
So what did he ask then? I went to your website, but doesn't it seem to reinforce the 'forsaken' meaning?

if I can remember Paul's quote correctly on here:
"My GOD, My GOD, why hast Thou spared me?"
Meaning: let's get this overwith, let it be finished.
If I have remembered this wrong, correct me, don't wanna put words in your mouth Paul.
