Targum Translation
#1
...

Hey Paul, can you tell me which English translation is being used in the Trilinear Targums you have up here at the site please? I sent you a message asking this, but never heard back, so I thought I might try again here...

Blessings,
Chuck

Hi Chuck, unfortunately I do not know the answer to that question. I found the Targums online a while back and can't find the link. I do know the English is a translation of the Hebrew, and not of the Aramaic portion since at times they vary widely (beginning in Genesis 1:1, where the Aramaic has the placeholder for YHWH, whereas the Hebrew text has "Elohim"). There are some verses where the Aramaic goes on quite an explanatory binge, and the English translator did not note it.

Doing a cursory googling of some of the translated English verses yields no matches to any known version that is online, which makes me lean towards the theory that this was an independent translation by whoever made these PDF files.

Yea, I thought they didn't read like a straight interlinear translation...

Shlama:
The Targums are at http://targum.info/?page_id=8 and the translator of Pseudo-Jonathan and Onkelos for the Torah is John Wesley Etheridge. The Targums are not a literal translation from Peshitta A"NK but are a paraphrase to "give the sense". Enjoy

Shlama Akhi Stephen ,

With all due respect I don't think you are correct. The tri linear targums show MT in one line of hebrew and the AUTHORIZED targum for the other. It is not showing both Pseudo Jonathan and Onkelos for Torah, but just MT and Onkelos. For the prophets it is just showing MT and the REAL Jonathan ben Uzziel. For example, Genesis 1:1 shows the first word as BERESHIT for the top line (MT) then for the lower line it show BEKADMIN (Onkelos). If it were showing Pseudo Jonathan the other line would read MIN AVELLA but that is nowhere. The English text I am not sure of. It could be JPS 1917, KJV, ASV, etc. I don't know that.

But yes the web link is excellent and JW Etheridge did do both Targums (along with Samaritan, Jerusalem and some Midrash) in his indispesnible work on the subject. Hope this helps Akhi Khabiba!
