Testing....back online
#1
Man, getting hacked and then having the hard drive crash on the old server. It's good to be back. <!-- sWink --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/wink1.gif" alt="Wink" title="Wink" /><!-- sWink -->

The major problem - post from the last several months were unrecoverable and have been permanently lost. My apologies to the authors of those posts. Hopefully we have most of the important stuff still intact.

Many Assyrian-related websites seem to be being hacked these days. That reminds me: Paul, I believe you're a friend of Alan Aldawood from assyrianlanguage.com (which is also the site the "grammar" section links up to)...any ideas on what's up with his website?

No, wish I did. There are many websites that went down:

I've gotta try and locate Alan and see if I can help.....this website in particular has the Genocide-related books in the "Articles" section, which surely ticked someone off.

Call me a rabble rouser......... <!-- sConfusedhocked: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/shocked.gif" alt="Confusedhocked:" title="Shocked" /><!-- sConfusedhocked: -->

But at least this Turkish guy (it's gotta be a GUY!) came 'out in the open' more or less, and said "I hacked this site!".

That's MORE than we got HERE at Peshitta.org!!

The COWARD who hacked us was/is *afraid* to leave his 'calling card'.

He just took down the whole board, probably thinking that it might not come back AT ALL.

But here I AM........a MEMBER AGAIN, after literally YEARS of trying to join again, and failing at it each and every time.

So, I wanna just say THANK YOU for doing what I could NOT DO..........getting the part of Peshitta.org where one joins, to actually WORK AGAIN!!

THAT MADE ME VERY HAPPY! <!-- s:onfire: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/onfire.gif" alt=":onfire:" title="On Fire" /><!-- s:onfire: -->

So.......something really GOOD, came out something really BAD!!

Praise MarYah!!! Albion

P.S. And I want to offend ALL the bad guys, EQUALLY:

Remember the Assyrian Genocide!

Was it just the forums that were down? I could've sworn the entire site was down for a good month or so (everytime I'd try to go onto the site, the page would just never finish loading). Before that, I had noticed that you couldn't join the forums but I thought that was just a technical glitch.

Before that, I had noticed that you couldn't join the forums but I thought that was just a technical glitch.

The forum was hijacked by someone with a .ru email address, who used an exploit in the phpBB code that allowed him to have administrator rights to the forums, essentially commandeering the controls here. The forum software itself was old and didn't have the latest security patches (phpBB is probably the most hacked forum software due to its popularity.) We've now installed the latest version, so hopefully the exploits have been closed. This version has a better update facility as well.

Something else shortly thereafter, I'm not sure what, caused the disk to fail. We were running on a DEC Alpha server previously. After the crash, it refused to boot up to the operating system. Something either overwrote the boot sector or the BIOS itself. Whether that was a hardware failure, or malicious code is hard to tell without forensically restoring the hard drive and hoping to find something in the system logs indicating what happened just prior.

The past couple of months have been frustrating as backups of certain components (Interlinear, Forum, Lexical Database, etc) were all over the place. Software compatibility issues hampered progress as well (it's not fun trying to migrate the forum's database tables to a format several versions newer). In addition to all of that, new hardware had to be purchased, installed, configured, etc.

Thankfully most of the important stuff is still intact. The forum lost a lot of posts, anything posted basically after mid-2005.

Moral of the story: Backup frequently.

We are now running on a state-of-the art server with hardware-based RAID units (if one disk fails, the other is a mirror), hardware-based firewall and we are now backing up hourly to an external server that happens to be offshore. The most data we will ever lose in the future will be a mere hour's worth.

Does anyone know what the status is of assyrianlanguage.com? Is there a mirror site by any chance?

Shlama daufoi,

I don't know what happened to assyrianlanguage.com, but I too have been missing it. For the past few months I've been using the archived sites at <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://assyrianlanguage.com">http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://ass ... nguage.com</a><!-- m -->. Keep in mind that they're very buggy and often times the pages/pictures won't load, but it's better than nothing.
