The last phrase of Romans 7:13 seems more digestible somehow from the Peshitta Text! <!-- s:biggrin: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/biggrin.gif" alt=":biggrin:" title="Big Grin" /><!-- s:biggrin: -->

Rom 7:13 Did then that which is good become death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good; --that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful. (American Standard Version)

13 Did that which is good, therefore, become death to me ? Far be it. But sin, that it might be seen to be sin, perfected death in me by means of that good [law]; that sin might the more be condemned, by means of the commandment. (James Murdock)

Also , in Rom. 7:5, the Greek speaks of 'sinful passions' (ASV) while the Peshitta refers to the 'pains of sin' (Lamsa). It looks like this problem with 'khoba' versus 'kaba' surfaces here as well as Rom. 1:26 that I've recently posted about. The khoba / kaba problem occurs in Col. 3:5 also where 'diseases' is immediately preceded by the cause of disease, namely 'impurity.' Again, Zorba doesn't want to discuss diseases that come from sexual impurity. He'd rather use this lukewarm 'passions' motif. Hmmm, the peshitta/o may have some merit in the epistles!

"But sin, that it might be seen to be sin,...."

Murdock should have worded this "shown to be sin" as in the greek, seen is being used incorrectly here by him.
