Online lexicon and Jwlbqnd - bj bear - 06-02-2004 Greetings, I have a question regarding the word Jwlbqnd. The online lexicon linked here at peshitta.org does show not show remain or contain as possilbe meanings for the world. Does Jwlbqnd ever have either of those connotations? In particular, does it have either of those connotations in Acts 3:21? Which Aramaic lexicon is considered the definitive resource? TIA. Peace, John - Paul Younan - 06-02-2004 Hi John, The word comes from the verbal root QBL. The primary meaning of this root is "accept, receive" and in fact is used in this sense for the familiar Jewish Gnosticism of "Kabbalah" (or more accurately spelled, Qabbala). I translated it "receive" in Acts 3:21 - although the root does have a wide variety of possible meanings (I may change it to "take up" now that I look at it a little closer.) Here the the entry from the Comprehensive Aramaic Lexicon (the most compiled resource on Aramaic): qbl V 011 passim to oppose 012 Syr to encounter 013 Syr to invoke 041 Syr to resist 042 Syr to be opposed 021 passim to receive, to accept 022 Syr %baTnA)% to be made pregnant 023 Syr %bAtar% to follow 024 Syr %Taybuw% to thank 025 Syr %nap$eh b% to betake oneself 026 Syr to undertake 027 Syr %qa.em qab.el% to expect 028 Syr to take up 029 JLAGal,JLATg,Syr,JBA to consent 0210 Syr %$uwrAyA)% to begin 0211 Syr to accept baptism 0212 JLAGal,JLATg to accept an opinion 0213 JLATg to receive punishment 051 passim to be accepted 052 JLAGal to be received 053 Syr %(al% to be dear to 054 JLATg to receive, to accept 031 Syr to be opposite 032 Syr %)ap:e)% to oppose 033 Syr to come 034 Syr to carry 035 Syr to anticipate 036 Syr to accept 037 Syr to receive 038 Syr to except 039 Syr to succeed 0310 Syr %ba$lAmA)% to greet 0311 Syr to kiss 061 Syr to be accepted LS2 640 qbl#2 V 011 ImpArEgOst,ImpArEg,JLATg,JBA to bring suit, to complain 012 JLATg to cry out J 1309 qbl#3 V 011 Qumran,JLA to become dark 031 JLA to darken (s.t.) It seems that I can take that as a no. - bj bear - 06-02-2004 Hi Paul, It will be a glorious day when I don't have to ask such basic questions. Thanks for your help! Peace, John - Paul Younan - 06-02-2004 Hi John, No problem. Here's a very quick way to get all the info you need: (1) The online Lexicon here was created by the Way International, and I use it as one of the resources in my translation work - but it's not the best. When you search for a word here, make note of the "root" in each search result. (2) In this case, the root is Lbq which when you cut and paste is Lbq in roman characters. (3) OK - then you go to the CAL at http://cal1.cn.huc.edu/searching/outline_lexicon_search.html and you enter those roman characters, but in reverse and without the capitalization! - "qbl" (4) There are some other minor differences you have to watch out for. For instance, when you see a "4" here, it's really a "$" over there. Here is a complete list of the differences: http://www.peshitta.org/initial/standard.html You then get your entry. I know it's not very convenient having the different schemas used here and over there, but with a little practice you should be able to search for anything. <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s --> Take care. - Coblentz - 06-03-2004 Hi Paul, I don't know that much about Aramaic but I wanted to comment on your possible changing of the word "received" to "take up" in Acts 3:21. Now, this could just be a side affect of the English language but I thought I would say it anyway. If you change it to "take up" then the action appears to be placed on Heaven, as if to reach down and bring up the Messiah. But it seems to me that a very important underlying truth is that Messiah is the one who went in Himself--hence, Heaven would accept Him with open arms, so to speak. It is kind of like the priest that would go into the Most Holy Place every year. Well, so did Messiah, once and for all, only it is the spiritual Most Holy Place as He removed the veil. The Temple did not reach out and bring in the priest when the time was right, but the priest went in at the appointed time. Does that make sense? David - Coblentz - 06-04-2004 Actually, I just read Acts 1:10-11 and the two messengers said, "You men of Galilee, why stand you gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen Him go into heaven" Forget I said anything Paul. <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/huh.gif" alt="" title="Huh" /><!-- s --> David That is amazingly helpful. Thank you! - bj bear - 06-04-2004 Hi Paul, Your last post is very helpful. Thank you so much! Peace, John |
