Hebrews 12:2 - Larry Kelsey - 10-02-2003 Shlama Akhay, I've posted on this verse before but I'm a bit confused due to different meanings from different dialects. http://www.peshitta.org/forums/forumid6/1001.html# The Greek text of Hebrews 12:2 has "he despised the shame" or more accurately 'kata-phron-ay-sas'--(having despised) the shame." There's something about 'despising the shame' that didn't seem like the best way to translate this or at least Lamsa, Etheridge and Murdock wholeheartedly agree because they have "suffered shame," "and unto shame delivered himself," and "surrendered himself to opprobrium" respectively. Opprobrium is defined as: 1) Disgrace arising from exceedingly shameful conduct; ignominy. 2) Scornful reproach or contempt. 3) A cause of shame or disgrace. This phrase in the Peshitta Text reads as follows: rsm0 Fthb L9w Under verbal conjugation for 'amsar' SEDRA has 'None.' The Compendious tells us something different, however. According to it, 'amsar' is the Aphel verbal conjugation of the root 'msr.' The definition 'amsar' (APHEL) in Compendious is a) to hold in comtempt, hold lightly, set at naught, contemn (which March's Thesaurus-Dictionary defines as 'to look upon as mean and despicable'), with L9 {and this phrase does contain L9w } of people, but usually of Fthb {and this phrase also contains Fthb } shame; Flxd fear; 0yx life; Fwm death 0swmn law; 0brq war b) to dare with d or l and a verb.
