How should I learn to pronounce some lines from NT? - Tim - 12-07-2014

I would like to learn to recite some lines of the NT in aramaic, as close as possible to how Jesus would have spoke them at the last supper. I found this site because I thought the Peshitta bible on the web was perfect for me. But I have no idea how to go about learning to pronounce the words. If I had enough time I would study everything I could regarding this, and quite a few other languages as well, but if any of you can point me in the right direction so that I can learn just a few lines, I would be grateful.

This is all Eastern pronunciation. People in the field say that's the more ancient pronunciation, there is also a Western one.

Don't be surprised if it sounds much like Arabic. Arabic/Aramaic/Hebrew are all part of the same Semitic family and are very close/similar languages.
Modern Hebrew was revived by Jews from Europe so no surprise there that it is much like a European/Latin language in the way it sounds. As one born in Europe, native Israeli are surprised how "perfect" by Hebrew pronunciation is. Nobody would say that though about my Aramaic pronunciation, that's very difficult for me.

And there are also these on this site:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.peshitta.org/music/nash01.ram">http://www.peshitta.org/music/nash01.ram</a><!-- m -->
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.peshitta.org/music/raza.ram">http://www.peshitta.org/music/raza.ram</a><!-- m -->

You'll probably need Real Player for those.

Thanks borota,
I wish you could have seen the smile on my face when I read your posts. I haven't been to the sites yet and will do so soon. I feel like a kid at Christmas having just ripped the paper off and about to play with the toy. <!-- s:onfire: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/onfire.gif" alt=":onfire:" title="On Fire" /><!-- s:onfire: -->

Dear borota,

I was very happy to read your post and thank you investing some of your time in me and my quest. I have briefly reviewed the sites you recommended and found lots of helpful into.

Regarding <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.esarhaddon.com/slota.zip">http://www.esarhaddon.com/slota.zip</a><!-- m -->, my security system said these types of zip files are dangerous so I didn't open.

I have bookmarked the site <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.peshitta.org/pdf/Yukhnch1t.pdf">http://www.peshitta.org/pdf/Yukhnch1t.pdf</a><!-- m --> and copied it to my computer.

When I tried to access <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.youtube.com/user/Athanasis1">https://www.youtube.com/user/Athanasis1</a><!-- m --> Youtube tells me this channel doesn't exist.

Though some of the links on <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.learnassyrian.com/aramaic/index.html">http://www.learnassyrian.com/aramaic/index.html</a><!-- m -->
don't work, I can't wait to get into those that do work.

I'm looking forward to watching these, <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.learnassyrian.com/videos/index.html">http://www.learnassyrian.com/videos/index.html</a><!-- m -->

For these three recommendations:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.peshitta.org/music/song.ram">http://www.peshitta.org/music/song.ram</a><!-- m -->
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.peshitta.org/music/nash01.ram">http://www.peshitta.org/music/nash01.ram</a><!-- m -->
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.peshitta.org/music/raza.ram">http://www.peshitta.org/music/raza.ram</a><!-- m -->
It looks like Real Player no longer exists. It has been moved to the web and branded as Real Player Cloud something. I can't work with cloud stuff on my computer so I can't watch these. Do you know how I could contact the creators to see if they have a generic .mp4 version or something?

It will take me a while to study this info and I may not get back to you till January due to the holidays. Till then, please accept my best wishes for you and yours,

Sincerely,
Tim

For youtube, that's not the posted link. This is the link:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.youtube.com/user/Athanasis1000?feature=watch">https://www.youtube.com/user/Athanasis1 ... ture=watch</a><!-- m -->
It ends in .../user/Athanasis1000?feature=watch
Real Player Cloud is the "current" Real Player. There was a time when Real Player was the cool kid on the block, back in the day. But I think you have enough to go by with the other links.
Slota.zip has an old Shockwave exe file, so maybe that's why your Antivirus flags it. It has Our Father in Aramaic read slowly and with onscreen indication of what is being read. Or maybe that site was hacked and virus-ed, I don't know...
For links that don't work on learnassyrian.com, you could gather them and let Robert Oshana @ Outlook .com know about it. Remove the space.

These are all sites/links over which I have absolutely no control, it's just what my searches on the subject got me.

Take care,
Greg

Hi Greg,

I just tried the youtube link in your post and it works. I am often a bonehead and am glad you clued me in on this one. I'll email Oshana as you suggested and thanks for the good info on the player and zip file. If I may, I'll report back after my first exploration of the info you have directed me to.

Take care,
Tim

Greg, I just sent an email to Robert Oshana at learnassyrian.com, and will let you know how it develops. Also, I sent an email to JesusSpokeAramaic.com and hope to hear from them. Tim
