Waheb in the Peshitta - Reb_Chaim_HaQoton - 06-27-2014 I looked at an interlinear translation of the Bible with the original Hebrew, the Peshitta, and English (see <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.peshitta.org/pdf/ot/Numbers.pdf">http://www.peshitta.org/pdf/ot/Numbers.pdf</a><!-- m --> ). In Numbers 21:14 it leaves the word untranslated as Waheb. In another website (see <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://cal1.cn.huc.edu/">http://cal1.cn.huc.edu/</a><!-- m --> ) I found that the verse is rendered in the Peshitta differently : In light of this, it seems that the translation of the word Waheb is in fact "flame" (related to the Hebrew word Shalhevet). What do you think? NOTE: I was having trouble using Hebrew characters in this post, so I took out the references to Hebrew characters because each time I tried to post with them in the message I received an error: SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ] Incorrect string value: '\xD7\x94\xD7\x9B\xD7\x9B' for column 'post_text' at row 1 [1366] Re: Waheb in the Peshitta - Thirdwoe - 06-29-2014 The 1st link is a Targum text, not the Peshitta text, thus a different word is given. |
