pronunciation of the Aramaic Kaddish - Sherri Szeman - 09-11-2003

First of all, I would like to thank all of you who responded to my previous post about transliterating & translating the Kaddish in Aramaic. You were a tremendous help to me.

In my travels on the net, I found a transliterated Aramaic version of the "Lord's Prayer" which had some letters capitalized to show which syllable of the word should be stressed. This is what it looks like:

Abba,
yitqadDASH sheMAK.
Teteh malKOOtak.
LahmaNA di misteYA
heb laNAH yoMA deNAH.
UsheBUQ laNAH hobayNA,
kedi shebaqNA lehayYA-bayNA
we'AL ta'elinNA lenisYONA ???.

It showed me how beautiful the language sounds, and how much alliteration and rhyming there is, which is something I could never have figured out on my own. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to capitalize (or underline the letters that need to be capitalized) in the version of the Aramaic Kaddish that I am putting in my novel. Here's what I have right now:

Yit-gadal v'yit-kadash sh'mey raba, b'alma di v'ra hirutey, vyam-lih mal-hutey b'ha-yey-hon uv'yomey-hon uv'ha-yey d'hol beyt yisrael ba-agala u-vizman kariv, amein.

Yit-barah v'yish-tabah v'yit-pa-ar v'yit-romam v'yit-na-sey v'yit-hadar v'yit-aleh v'yit-halal sh'mey d'kud-sha, b'rih hu, leyla min kol bir-hata v'shi-rata tush-b'hata v'ne-hemata da-amiran b'alma, amein.

Y'hey sh'lama raba min sh'ma-ya, v'ha-yim aleynu v'al kol yisrael, amein.

Oseh shalom bim-romav, hu ya-aseh shalom aleynu v'al kol yisrael, amein.

I'm hoping that by my putting the text in, you can just highlight/underline/or capitalize the syllables that would be stressed in pronunciation. I know that 99% of my readers will not know Hebrew. I doubt if any of them will know Aramaic, and I would love for them to be able to pronounce, as above with the "Lord's prayer," so they can see for themselves how beautiful it is.

I cannot offer you any financial compensation as, unfortunately, literary authors make no money. But I can include your name in my acknowledgments page, thanking you. Here's what that paragraph looks like so far:

To the Aramaic scholars and experts who contacted me after I posted a forum question on http://www.peshitta.org, administered by Paul Younan. Thank you for transliterating and translating the prayers I requested, into both western and eastern dialects of Aramaic, as well as providing me with both the Ashkenazic and Sephardic pronunciations. Thank you, Gabriel Andrew Roth, Samuel Tykocinski, Dana Dean, and Eliyah Faro, for your patience and your hard work. And thank you, Paul Younan, for doing all the challenging administrative work to make such information available to anyone who wishes to find it. May G-d bless you and keep you well.

Thank you again, and may G-d bless you all and keep you safe.

Hi Sherry,

I've underlined the syllables that should be stressed during pronunciation (I've also included in red anything I found missing):

Dear Paul,
First let me apologize in case this ends up in the wrong place. The print is so small that I can barely read it and I'm afraid I can't figure out how to change it. I'm also not sure how to respond to a post in this new format. Sorry, I'm not very chat-room literate
Thank you so very much for underlining the emphasized syllables in the aramaic kaddish. I owe you a copy of the novel when it comes out.
Bless you for all the hard work you're doing.
