Question About Arak - Burning one - 12-03-2011

Chanukah is just around the corner, and as I was looking up recipes for sufganiyot I stumbled across a drink called Arak that is used at times for the filling. What I read said it was a Syrian alcoholic drink made with aniseed. Just wondering if anyone here has tried it before.

Oh yes, one of my favorite drinks. Similar to the Greek ouzo, very strong. Be careful it burns going down.

I really like any Lebanese or Syrian brand, the bottle I have now is Kefraya, a Lebanese brand. Really tasty, and generally available here in middle eastern grocers.

i forgot to give my impressions on the Arak:
definitely something different - i'm not much into hard liquor (good beer is my hobby), so it will take getting used to - but it was not unpleasant by any means! a great licorice flavor!
the Arak sufganiyot were a strike-out, unfortunately, so i'll be sticking to the traditional fillers...

Thanks for the feedback. It is definitely an acquired taste that I partake very infrequently. Like you,I'm a beer guy. I haven't forgotten about sending you some home brew. My wife accidentally broke my hydrometer and I haven't brewed in a while. Hope to get a batch brewed shortly.
