Ezra 6 - sean - 02-25-2011

I read ezna 6-11 the other day- " Also I have made a decree that whoever shall alter this ordinance, let a beam be pulled down from his house, and they shall make it a cross for him and they shall crucify him upon it....'
Could someone give me some more information on this. I thought it was the romans who crucified people, did the jews also do this in the old covenant as it saids here in ezra. I did look in the trilinear targums but the book of ezra was not there or I missed it.

Re: Ezra 6 - Alan G77 - 02-25-2011

It is actually "impaled" not crucified. NASB version.

Re: Ezra 6 - Alan G77 - 02-25-2011

What version were you reading because the NASB does not say "make a cross".

Re: Ezra 6 - Aaron S - 02-25-2011

Lamsa reads, "Also I have made a decree that whosoever shall alter this ordinance, let a beam be pulled down from his house, and they shall make it a cross for him and they shall crucify him upon it; and let his house be made a dunghill for this." The word used here is the same one used in the Apostolic Writings when referring to the execution stake, so the translator opted to merge the variant translations into one. I would have opted toward 'execution stake' or 'gallows' and 'hang,' the translator opted for cross.

Re: Ezra 6 - Alan G77 - 02-25-2011

Lamsa seems to have lived in a fantasy world.
