Dawidha, the CoE Psalter - Christina - 04-13-2009

Shlama Shamasha,

I would like to know how the CoE Psalter is arranged, the Catholic Encyclopedia states:

"Dawidha (David), the Psalter, divided into hulali, which answer more or less to the kathismata of the Greeks. It includes the collects of the hulali." (East Syrian Rite)

How does the CoE Psalter differ to the Greek Orthodox Psalter? This is a link to an online edition of The Psalter According to the Seventy by The Holy Transfiguration Monastery, the most popular English translation LXX Psalter: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.pomog.org/index.html?http://www.pomog.org/psalter.shtml">http://www.pomog.org/index.html?http:// ... lter.shtml</a><!-- m -->.

Also does the CoE Psalter have five extra Psalms? From Wikipedia:

"Psalms 152 to 155 are additional Psalms found in the Syriac Peshitta and, for two of them, in the Dead Sea scrolls. Together with Psalm 151 they are also called the 'Five Apocryphal Psalms of David'." (Psalms 152-155)

Shlama Khati,

See the following link for an exhaustive treatment of the CoE Psalter (Dawidha):

In particular, reference the indexes beginning on page 259 of Maclean's book.

Hulali means "divisions", there are 21 of them in the CoE Psalter....equivalent in function to the 20 Greek Kathisma.

The Peshitta OT does have four Psalms not found in the Masoretic tradition of the Hebrews (or any other extant tradition for that matter)...however I know of at least one of them that was found, in the original Hebrew, in the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Thanks for the link akhi Paul, I've downloaded the file.
