The Vulgate is an important resource - ograabe - 10-09-2008

St. Jerome was commisioned by Pope Damasus I in 382 to update the Latin translation of Bible. Its contains the Latin translation of the Hebrew Tanakh rather than using Greek Septuagint. Jerome sought out the earliest versions of the New Testament books including the available "Hebrew" versions. Jerome mentioned particularly his search for the original "Hebrew" version of Matthew.

This late Fourth Century translation is helpful it pinning down some aspects of the New Testament changes that may have occurred. For example the story of the woman caught in adultery in John 8 is found in the Vulgate but the spurious 1 John 5:7 is not.

The whole Vulgate in Latin is part of the Online Bible available at http://www.onlinebibleusa.com/
