Name of Jesus - simeon78 - 12-30-2004

Shalom,

Maybe it's a very basic question, but how to pronounce the name of Jesus in Aramaic and Hebrew?
Is it Yeshua, Yahshua, Yehoshua or Eeshoo/a?

Thanx.

Shlama Simeon,

Jesus' name is "Joshua".

Modern Hebrew-speakers pronounce "Joshua" as "Yeshua". Modern Aramaic-speakers have a couple of different ways of pronouncing it - "Yeshu" (some Aramaic communities in Turkey, Lebanon and Syria) and "Eeshu" (Syria, Iraq, Iran.)

How it was pronounced back in His time, we cannot be sure since there were no vowels in the alphabet at the time.
