It seems that Jesus received his kingship through Joseph - otherwise why record Joseph's genalogy at all?

Here's the dilemma. In the OT, Jesus is describes as a "prince", yet in the NT He is King. Note that He is King in His later life. Joseph seems to be dead by then, as Mary seems to be alone, and John was told to look after her... Of course, when Joseph died, the Kingship would have gone to Jesus <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s -->

Has anyone or any Church etc ever had such a theory as to why Jesus was born a prince? Can you refer me to it?

The Kingdom of God has a King and he has a son, Jesus the Prince. The son of a King is always considered a prince.
