Shalom Chaverim!

Another day of debating with an atheist, was raised a possible contradiction in a given passage of the Old Testament.
It is found in Genesis 14:18-20

When we look at verse 20, we find in the end exactly like this:

And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

And just like that in Hebrew we have also:

V'baruch El Elyon asher migen tsareycha beyadecha vayiten lo maaser michil.

After all, who is giving a tithe to whom? It was the Creator who gave tithes?
That's what the text seems to show, since not mention the name of Abraham cites the text.

How would the text of Hebrews 7:1-2?

Help me understand this because the atheist it really bugged me?

Shlama akhi,

don't fret over this at all! the Hebrew is clear who is blessing and who is giving the tithes. here's the actual transliteration - the one you've presented is a bit off:

OOVROOK EYL ELYON ASHER-MEEGEYN TZAREKA BEYADEKA VA'YEETEN-LO MA'ASEYR MEEKHOL

the literal reads:

"...AND BLESSED IS GOD MOST HIGH, WHO DELIVERED YOUR ENEMIES INTO YOUR HAND." AND HE GAVE TO HIM A TENTH FROM ALL.

all it takes is a but a cursory understanding of Hebrew syntax and grammar and the atheist's argument dissolves.

concerning Hebrews, the Peshitta reads:

1 Yet, this Malkeezdeq was the king of Shaleem, the priest of Alaha the Highest, and he met Awraham when he returned from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him.
2 And to him Awraham separated a tenth from every thing that was with him. Yet his name, being explained, is ?the King of Uprightness,? and furthermore, ?M?lek-Shaleem? - that is, ?the King of Peace.?

as you can see, Hebrews also gels smoothly with how the Hebrew reads. no problem here! praise Alaha!

Chayim b'Moshiach,
Jeremy
The "he" is speaking of Abraham as the giver of the tenth to Melchisedek, which is a type of The Messiah...we know this is true...as seen in the book of Hebrews in 7:4 "But see how much greater was this one, that Abraham, the head of the fathers, gave to him a tenth of the first."
