(Galatians 6:11)

("Khazaw aylin ketibin ktaba lkon b'aidi.")

I'm wondering why e.g. Lamsa still translated the word 'long' and G. Roth, 'big' for the word 'aylin' ??

Thanks.
Most translations seem to use the KJV as their background text, and are reluctant to stray from it. Hence, the tendency to carry forward the word "large", or some derivation of it, as used in the KJV. My take on it would be:

ch:zaw `ay:leyn k'thiy:bon k'eth:b'eth l:kuwn b'i`y:day

Ye-see what-to-that written? I-wrote to-you in-my-hands.

If the first part is not a rhetorical question, which is hard to know for sure, then it would be like this:

Ye-see, what-to-that written, I-wrote to-you in-my-hands.

Shlama,

with all do respect to them and their work, i just can't, for the life of me, understand the clinging to the KJV that some translators have done -- especially with a text that isn't even from the GREEK!! call me a purist....

anyhow, when i translated Galatians for personal use, i chose to render it:

You can see what writings that I?ve written to you in my own hand!

there simply is no "big" or "long" in the Peshitta.

Chayim b'Moshiach,
Jeremy
I've got a theory about this.

I was not raised with the KJV, and neither was I with the Dutch counterpart, the Dutch 17th age 'translation of the state' (Statenvertaling)

I was raised with a Bibletranslation from the Watchtower. I've no bias at all, that that translation is ok, I even do not use it as a checkup etc.
But -still- I discovered that during proofreading of the Dutch Aramaic Peshitta, I had rendered some verses in the style of the NWT (new world translation) The brain just works like that, it's a blind spot.

You see the letters and the words, but you think the KJV-lines. Of course, when I found out, I corrected the rendering

Thank you very much for making certain that the word 'big' really was not there
